Premier League - Liverpool eye Sigurdsson swoop

Sun, 03 Jun 10:52:00 2012

New Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers could snatch midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson away from his former club Swansea.

Swansea City's Gylfi Sigurdsson celebrates - 0

Sigurdsson is yet to sign a contract with the Swans despite agreement on a club-record £6.8 million deal to sign him permanently from Hoffenheim following a successful loan spell.

Rodgers had pushed the Welsh club to sign Sigurdsson, who he also worked with at Reading, but the Northern Irishman's move to Anfield could prompt a rethink by the player.

"Gylfi came to Swansea because I was there as manager and his scoring record was fantastic," Rodgers said.

He has vowed to let Sigurdsson talk to the new Swansea boss first - after agreeing with chairman Huw Jenkins not to poach any of his former players for 12 months - but said he would make a move for the Iceland international should any talks break down.

Rodgers added: "I pushed the club to make an agreement [to sign Sigurdsson permanently] and they did that in terms of the fee - and agreed the salary.

"So I have said to Huw: 'I'm not going to do anything untoward.

"This is a guy you want, but it is down to Gylfi'.

"If he comes on the market I have to be interested. He knows that I rate his qualities and abilities.

"I said to Huw: 'If I speak to the kid I'll tell him to speak to the new manager, whoever that is'.

"But if he's not comfortable with that, he's in the market place then - and I have to look at him."

  1. As a big liverpool fan i wanted to say to all the swansea fans how sorry i am that this is all happening. It must be a nightmare for you all, and think you have an excellent and very hard playing team.. I know that this is no excuse, but unfortunately in this day and age money talks.. Anyway I want to wish you all well, and hope you can recover from this loss. I believe that your team will only come out of this stronger than ever, and hope and wish swansea all the best for the new season..

  3. Gylfi scored one more goal than Craig Bellamy and only five less than Suarez, you have to give him a shot, you're always going to get people who moan but Dirk Kuyt is leaving, he's a working hero, I ain't moaning, Dirk is a credit to any club he plays for, people move on and you have to deal with it, i'm not to happy with Brendan taking the helm, Championship or not, I support my club, now stop whining, brush your teeth, it's bed time.

Theft, Betrayal, (" I will not poach from Swansea") call it what you want, Rodgers is doing what he does best, and that is using somebody's else's brain and football knowledge. Looserpool Championship Here you come.

  5. Some persistent trolls need to get a better grasp on the dealings of football clubs. Its been explained already on here that he is on loan so technically isnt a swansea player. So no wrong doing there. Hopefuly youve read these posts and feel a bit stupid for trolling the wrong info. Standards are seriously slipping in yahoo land. Less emphasis on silly pictures and names, and more on factual info plz. ty.

  6. This player is no henderson or adam. He is much more dynamic, quicker and skillful. I've watched him last season and he is the closest thing to a gerrard or schweinsteihger. He will be one hell of a bargain thanks to swansea and not liverpool securing his price !

  7. Under Rodgers Liverpool will re-establish themselves as a 5 five team....after the Suarez facade Liverpool's reputation has been dented but with Rodgers at the helm, some summer editions they'll do very well...I support Plymouth Argyle so there isn't much for me to smile about.

  8. There is a difference between a good for Swansea and a good for Liverpool player. Swanse is going to be happy in the top 10. Liverpool will be devastated not to be top 4 in the toughest Premier League in years.

LOL shows how much faith they have in Carroll if they're really looking to add Sigurdsson to their squad! And if they mean for him to warm the bench and only play Carlng Cup matches, you really think he'll want to go there when he's guaranteed all the playing time he wants at Swansea? Hahaha. Liverfools making all the wrong moves once again! Wehey!! :-P

  12. I am a big swansea city supporter, the agreement was that he could'nt sign any player for a year, siggy has'nt signed on the dotted line so he is'nt actually a swansea city player yet. If siggy turns down the chance to join swansea city ( he should sign for swansea thoe) to join liverpool, that is upto him, coz i don't want any player joining swansea city that he is'nt fully committed to the club. It has hurt me so much that brendan said (it was a easy decision to make, to accept the liverpool job). Huw jenkins will do everything he can to try and get siggy to sign on the dotted line.

  13. Rogers didn't spot Sigurdsson it was Brian McDermott when he was working under Steve Coppell at Reading. Gilfi lived with the McDermott's when he joined our Academy and then was brought into the first team when McD became manager. Gilfi is an exceptional player and I hope our new Russian owner will splash the cash to get him back at his "home" club.

  15. I not too wooried about this guy, I don't know much about him, but I do know what we need at Liverpool & thats a top quality striker, who can scores lots & lots of goals & not lose it because his confendance is down, or get in the papers etc for somthing other than a good performance in a red shirt. I like carrol & Surez, but they're not capable of scoring 30-40 goals a season & surez is too good at saying or doing somthing stupid which makes the club look bad, & carroll yes on his day he's a great player, but he seems to have trouble finding the net & seems to have a lot of off days (a bit like liverpool this last season.

  17. sigurdsson is a great player, but liverpool already made this mistake with Charlie Adam and Jordan Henderson. they need to remember that they have plenty of talented central midfielders that like to shoot. It's time to buy good players in other positions.

  18. The player in question isnt a swansea player so rodgers isnt doing anything wrong. rodgers will bring him to lfc because they have built up a good working relationship and thats all their is to it.

  19. I don't know anything about this player.I saw him a couple of times on match of the day that's all. What I am confused with are the comments on here about back stabbing and underhand dealing by the new LFC manager.Too stab somebody in the back you have to do it from behind them..Didn't this man tell his previous employer exactly what he was going to do if a certain set of circumstances came about?I/E the player did not sign for Swansea..As he has told the chairman face to face and has in fact told the entire world what he intends to do..How can this be called back stabbing or underhand?..Unless like the word gay these two words now have a completely different meaning from what I was taught at school.

  20. Due to Rodgers agreeing to NOT poach any Swansea players for 12 months (it was in the compensation deal) Sigurdsson is the ONLY player he could sign, as he isn't actually a Swansea player as he was only signed on loan. So no underhanded tactics from Rodgers at all despite what some post suggest.
