Rafael van der Vaart has insisted he wants to stay at Tottenham, although he refused to entirely rule out a move to Schalke.
The 29-year-old former Hamburg midfielder has been linked with a return to Germany, where his wife still works.
Asked about the prospect of joining Schalke, Dutchman Van der Vaart told Bild: "I don't know. Actually, I want to stay at Tottenham. But, in football, you never know."
Pointing out he never expected to join Spurs or Real Madrid in the way he did, he added: "I spent three years living in Hamburg and had a wonderful time at HSV.
"My wife, Sylvie, works there and we have many friends who live in your country."

@1 NUFC?? 5-0, dont even come close to our style of play, hit it long and hit it hard to Cisse or Ba thats about all on there tactics..
Rafael van der Vaart, along with Scott Parker and Adebayor have been Spurs most consistent players. They have been the real difference in this team. Although Louis Saha made a significant contribution too - Spurs along with Newcastle United - the most exciting and interesting PURE footballing sides in the premiership - these teams make what is wonderful about English football.
