West Brom striker Kevin Phillips looks set to join Birmingham on a two-year deal.
The 34-year-old is out of contract at The Hawthorns, and it appears Albion's stance of only offering him a new one-year deal with the option of a further year dependent on appearances has backfired on them.
Blues boss Alex McLeish has offered a straight two-year contract for Phillips, whose 24 goals last season helped the Baggies win promotion to the Premier League and reach the FA Cup semi-finals.
The possible capture of Phillips, who has netted 46 goals in 81 games for the Baggies, would be a relief for McLeish following the exit of Mikael Forssell to Hannover earlier this summer.
It could also prompt Albion boss Tony Mowbray to reignite his interest in Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi, who has been linked with a £3million move to The Hawthorns.

Great signing for Birmingham. Good solid Championship striker with a prooven record at this level.
Phillips has always chased the money and has no loyalty to any club. Not good enough for the premier league.
old marshy i think you ment luke moore, i agree with what your saying about passing on his knowledge an all that but having just gone up the club must think about dare i say it relegation we cant afford to pay large wages in the championship ,iam not being negative just realistic..................
I beleive The Albion have been very shortsighted,they should have offered KP a 2 year deal just for what he has acheived.If for some reson he had not been fit to play his skill and knowledge could have been passed to others on the training ground,especially Stefan Moore.{Does the Albion not know there is a law against ageism}
i think kp is thinking about the money done great for us baggies but not sure if he could cope with premier league pace week in week out good luck to him in whatever he decides..........
Phillips going to Birmingham I thought he would stay at west brom and play in the premiership this season but it is ovious that he might feel that he is too old to play in the premiership again
