Premier League - Transfer Talk: So hot right now

Eurosport - Thu, 03 Jul 22:04:00 2008

Much like Chanel's turquoise patent clear vinyl logo tote bag, a Euro 2008 star is this season's must-have accessory.

FOOTBALL 2008 Euro 2008 Greece Georgios Samaras - 0

Tottenham and Chelsea proved their credentials as early trend setters this summer by landing one each - in the shapes of Luka Modric and Jose Bosingwa - even before the action in Austria and Switzerland started.

And post-tournament, the trend is showing no sign of abating as Premier League clubs go all out in an attempt to lure the latest flash-in-the-pans to catch the eye to the English top flight.

Most notably, West London fashionistas Chelsea have already hit the shops again and bagged themselves a second - Deco - and are busy hunting for more with David Villa and Andrei Arshavin identified as targets for Big Phil Scolari.

Up in the European City of Culture, Liverpool are clearly in touch with their European side and have also been linked to Villa, along with most of the victorious Spanish squad, including David Silva.

Germany goal ace Lukas Podolski has been linked to both Manchester City and Tottenham while moves for Orlando Engelaar (Everton), Josip Simunic (Fulham), Arda Turan (Newcastle) and Dani Guiza (Tottenham), to mention but a few, have all been mooted.

And Premier League new boys Hull City are no different, albeit if Tigers boss Phil Brown's choice of purchase is more Primark than Chanel.

Having already been linked with Greece substitute Stelios Giannakopoulos, Brown's latest target comes in the similarly bench-warming form of Georgios Samaras.

The Manchester City-owned hitman is back at Eastlands following a loan spell with Celtic last season but is unlikely to stay for long following the capture of Jo from CSKA Moscow and the lingering possibility of Ronaldinho arriving from Barcelona (see below). Hull are set to offer the Greek a year-long loan deal.

Meanwhile the Tigers are also confident of capturing Samaras's former City team-mate Geovanni.

David Bentley continues to feature in transfer tittle-tattle, although today it is his club Blackburn whose turn it is to offer forth some words on his future. New Rovers boss Paul Ince said: "I want David here next season and I'm looking forward to seeing him on 7th July for pre-season training." TT is no Einstein, but we reckon that is a veiled threat to Tottenham and Liverpool to keep their hands off - or they will have the Guvnor to deal with.

Back in London, Diomansy Kamara's injury has left Fulham boss Roy Hodgson in a bit of a striker-less pickle. The Senegal 'goalgetter' will be out for the next six months with a cruciate ligament injury but the Cottagers see a solution in the signing of Dave Kitson.

The flame-haired Reading forward is set to be subjected to a £3 million bid from Craven Cottage, although competition is expected from Wigan, who are also on the lookout for someone to bolster their far from potent strikeforce.

Meanwhile, Hodgson has made a bid to bring another Euro 2008 squad member to England - Sweden defender Fredrik Stoor, who currently plies his trade for Norwegian club Rosenborg.

"We have received an offer from Fulham but I don't wish to comment on the price at this point," Rosenborg assistant director Erik Hoftun told newspaper Tronder-Avisa.

Meanwhile, Bolton defender Abdoulaye Meite finally wants to leave the Reebok, three months after having been frozen out of the side by boss Gary Megson. Hull, once again, are lurking with intent.

And finally, it appears that Anton Ferdinand likes nothing better than to follow in his big brother's footsteps. Just like Rio, the West Ham defender has recently travelled to Africa on a charity mission (although, unlike his brother, he was denied the luxury of being given a tribal chiefdom) where he revealed he has no intention of leaving the Hammers for Aston Villa this summer. "I love playing for the club," he said.

The Two Ronnies

The Cristiano Ronaldo saga has taken an interesting turn with news that he will undergo surgery on his ankle "in the next two or three days". That means that his potentially combustible and frankly frightening reunion with Alex Ferguson will have to be further delayed. Do not expect this particular story to reach a conclusion any time soon.

And Manchester City could yet capture Ronaldinho from Barcelona after the tubby playmaker's good friend Jo finally arrived at Eastlands. The former CSKA striker could play a crucial role in persuading his Brazilian countryman to head for Manchester. Blues boss Mark Hughes insisted talks with Ronaldinho's representatives are ongoing.

  11. Ronaldo is the best player in the world and he needs to stay at Man United!!! Why? The premiership is the best league in the world now, the best players by the beginning of next season will all be there. So he needs to stay to prove himself.
Schwainsteiger come to Man U! Villa come to Liverpool!! That would be a crazy striking duo with Torres. #$%^( Gareth Barry! He sucks get rid of him. sell him to Liverpool Villa dont need him, they got Abonglahor and Young. Oh and Deco was the biggest deal of the transfer season. Chelsea is gonna be tough under Scolari and the crop they got comin in.

  12. ronaldo got lucky? over 40 times? give your head a shake. i doubt he'll match that total this year, but i'd be surprised if he didn't top 30 again. i hate man utd, and would love to see him bolt to madrid, aside from the fact ferguson will probably get enough cash back to buy three or four world class replacements, but give the guy his due, despite his theatrics, no one in the premier league did more last season. the club worth a billion pounds is going to get even richer ~ sickening.

  19. Glad to see my lot Stoke are investing so heavily to strengthen themselves for losing 38 games on the trot. Tottenham are after Podolski, Man City after Ronaldhino and all we seem intent on doing is snapping up the entire Jamaican frontline.

    F**king ace.
