The sale of Newcastle could have moved a step closer after a group of Asian businessmen were shown around the club on Thursday.
The potential buyers, thought to be from Malaysia, were given a tour of the club's facilities and have since returned to London to continue discussions.
There was no official confirmation of the story, but with all interested parties having signed non-disclosure agreements, that came as no surprise.
But sources close to the club were not denying it either, and there is a growing feeling that an end to a saga which has rumbled on for more than a month could be in sight.
The identity of the group remains unknown, as do those of most of the consortia who have expressed a serious interest in buying the club.
Current owner Mike Ashley and the people closest to the ongoing negotiations were optimistic on Wednesday that significant progress could be made within 48 hours, and while there is still much ground to be covered, it appears things are now moving more rapidly.
Indeed, there is a feeling that a deal could be struck within days and the decisive move could be made next week.

Like i said, talk is cheap pal!
And on!
And the wait goes on!
Still waiting!
I am waiting!
voiceofreason,
'All day, every day, in these columns'
Okay then,
i challenge you to find these comments - go on, there are 100s of articles to trawl through!
Find these alleged comments, copy them and paste them on this thread - with the names and dates below the comments too so we can follow them up!
Talk is cheap pal!
"I have yet to meet a NUFC fan who claims we belong in the top flight, i have yet to meet an NUFC fan who bangs on that we are a big club . . . . where do you get your information from - please, come on, i am interested"
You don't get out much then, do you?
Don't you read these columns?
All day, every day, in these columns, Radio 5 Live football phone-ins, Talksport.
Have I missed anywhere?
Don't shoot the messenger.
"You will however never convince the Toon fans that Hull and Wigan are bigger" I didn't say THAT. Reread the post. I said that they had exceeded the expectations of their supporters.
"And that is defined by it's history, the players who they have had" In that case you could make out a case for almost every club in the top two divisions being a "Big" club and certainly Leeds from League 1.
For me a Big club is one that performs well most seasons and wins trophies every so often and there is something seriously wrong at Newcastle if they win nothing in 54 years. (excluding Fairs Cup)
You can't keep blaming bad Directors and managers. There is something inherently wrong.
ANNY KRISHNAN. ANNY KRISHNAN. ANNY KRISHNAN. ALAN SHEARER...................... voiceofreason... HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR VILLAINS AND IDIOTS RUNNING THIS CLUB, WE'D BE DOING JUST FINE. WE'VE AT LEAST GOT A FAN BASE. PROBLEM IS. WE'VE BEEN EXPLOITED
More speculation. The tea lady was seen walking through SJP with the cleaner, and were instantly reported by the media as potential buyers.
Who next?
voiceofreason
you read too many tabloids - there is not a word of truth in anything you have said.
Voice of untruth morelike pal!
I have yet to meet a NUFC fan who claims we belong in the top flight, i have yet to meet an NUFC fan who bangs on that we are a big club . . . . where do you get your information from - please, come on, i am interested.
Show me the evidence . . . . . bet you can't; you know why, 'cause it is simply not true.
We are where we are because at this moment in time, that is 'where we belong'!
Hopefully, sometime soon, our fortunes will change and the new owners (whoever they may be) will provide us with a squad of players that will give 100% committment and make us proud - so what if they win nowt, that's not the be all and end all . . . . . we just want a team to be proud of . . . . that's all!
Now did you digest all of that . . . . truth?
Have to disagree Voice. For me a Big Club is not about trophies won in the last 10 or 20 or 30 years. It is about standing in football. And that is defined by it's history, the players who they have had and therefore the kind of teams which they have been able to feild, and most of all the support base. So in Newcastle's case it's not just about Shearer and Keegan, but the likes of Beardsley, McDermott, Macdonald, Milburn, etc give them their history and make them a big club. So in my eyes, regardless of not having won a trophy in many years, Newcastle have always been and always will be a big club.
voiceofreason, We have heard this so many times and it is a general belief that us Geordies think we are bigger than we really are and should be winning trophies in the Premiership etc etc etc. Have you ever heard this, not from a TV pundit or in a national newspaper but from an actual Newcastle fan. You may well have and I wont dispute it but I haven't.
You will however never convince the Toon fans that Hull and Wigan are bigger and Bolton have a much better history because as a fact, they are not and that is no disrespect to them.
"Indeed, there is a feeling that a deal could be struck within days" closes the article. Has/is that not said about every deal to buy any club?
It is the totally unrealistic aspirations of supporters accompanied by relegation that often results in yet further degradation of the club concerned.
Many people have said before and not just on here, that Newcastle supporters have this inflated idea that it is a "Big" club.
It is not. It is a small club with "Big" support, due to its geographical location.
It has not been a major player in the "trophies won" league since 1955.
Don't belittle the achievements of clubs like Wigan and Hull, who have exceeded their supporters expectations by some margin just to get into the Premiership.
Bolton are a different kettle of fish, as they have some "history" like Newcastle. Indeed, some would say a better history than Newcastle.
You guys have to get over this "we belong in the top flight" paranoia. It is this which has haunted you for over 50 years.
Just be thankful that you did not go out of the league altogether, as you nearly did, until the famous "King Kev" (LOL) came to the rescue.
Have a little more humility. Build from the bottom, instead of thinking you are at the top, because you are clearly not.
markthegeordie2003...10.. I've going to Toon games since 1974. Missed a few years working abroad. SJH, Well, he did do wonders for the club, but he himself wasn't whiter than white. Relocating the ground and developing the area around SJP might of been on the agenda. But he was the best man to do the chairman's job in living history. Then he went a spoiled it all by handing the reigns to Shepherd, and his flakey son, Douglas Hall. Good riddance to them........
omniuk...8.. Have you ever been to a Man united game? I have, and I'm quite certain that there has been, on occasions, a certain amount of match fixing going on. Every time Ronaldo hit the deck during the last two seasons, the referee could have, and should have pulled out a yellow card. Decisions that change the course of games. Two obvious attempts at deceiving the referee. 2 yellow cards, and the cheat is off the field, and munchester united are down to 10 men. But the referees choose not to book him. Why? Cos they're all bought and paid for. Match fixing
Just read the Holy Bible (The Chronicle), and they reckon this is serious stuff!
Woohoo, could that be a light i see at the end of this tunnel!
sr.melvin...7 totally agree with the Fat Freddie comments not sure how old you are but with the exception of SJH I can't remember a decent owner/chairman and I can remember back to Lord Westwood. Fat Freddie had the club near bankruptcy if the stories from Cashley are to be believed and after the "negotiation" with Luque I find it very believeable.
Fat Freddie's track reacord on managerial appointments (Sir Bobby excluded) was appauling as well, Souness managed to take a apart a decent squad in the space of a summer. Messers Gullit, Dagliesh and Alardyce pretty much in the same vain and the less said about the latters signings the better.
Would clear out the likes of Joey "the thug" Barton, Xisco, Smith, Enrique, Guttierez and give some of the kids a go and lets face it they couldn't do any worse than the so called 1st team players did last year. Let's just hope that whoever these interested parties are they have common sense and business acumen to get us back to where we should be.
One last thing if Fat Freddie gets anywhere near the club I'm going to become a Gateshead fan lmao.
safcsmb, comment 5 why dont you try it, you may be surprised
When I was in Malaysia during the 80s there were constant scandals of match fixings etc in the domestic league there - hope it isnt the same bunch
markthegeordie2003.. 2.....Better the devil you know. I'm not having it. The Toon are still trying to recover from the Shepherd era. Ashley was just part of the disease. The infestation began under Shepherd. Shepherd left this club, I hate to say it - but here goes, with a serious cancer. I said at the begging of last season that NUFC may need to spend some time in the Championship to recover from the critically flawed miss management of Shepherd and Souness.
It might hurt, but the Championship is probably the place we need to be order to cut the rot out of the Toon and to re - invigorate ourselves. We'll be back. All we need is on owner with intellect and integrity. The club is big enough to generate the resources needed to get back into the top strata. You look at the Wigan's, Hull's and Bolton's of this world. If they had our recent history to deal with, they'd be gone. People are interested because we represent good business. With the right strategy - the Toon represents a winner...
