The sale of Newcastle could have moved a step closer after a group of Asian businessmen were shown around the club on Thursday.
The potential buyers, thought to be from Malaysia, were given a tour of the club's facilities and have since returned to London to continue discussions.
There was no official confirmation of the story, but with all interested parties having signed non-disclosure agreements, that came as no surprise.
But sources close to the club were not denying it either, and there is a growing feeling that an end to a saga which has rumbled on for more than a month could be in sight.
The identity of the group remains unknown, as do those of most of the consortia who have expressed a serious interest in buying the club.
Current owner Mike Ashley and the people closest to the ongoing negotiations were optimistic on Wednesday that significant progress could be made within 48 hours, and while there is still much ground to be covered, it appears things are now moving more rapidly.
Indeed, there is a feeling that a deal could be struck within days and the decisive move could be made next week.

I always speak the truth, even when it hurts; unlike you, who just spouts lies.
Spoken like a true Macken, cameron w - except if I had spoken the truth (as you just have), I would have got nothing in return but abuse (from you especially). Like you say, believe the rumoured bidders and that there is a take-over imminent only when it actually happens.
The word is, ashley didn't pay off any debts; he simply transferred them!
ashley is full of shyte and i don't believe a word that comes from his camp; as for this 'Malaysian Consortium', hmmmmm! It could well be a few suited blokes from Stowell Street for all we know! When a deal is finally signed, sealed and delivered and this greedy chancer is finally gone . . . .then i believe we will finally begin to see some light at the end of a very, very long tunnel!
markthegeordie2003....agree with you mate, hindsight is a wonderful thing, the word is ashley paid off the 120million debt that freddie had got us into?? i think freddie wanted to dine at the top table without getting his house in order.
Remember all the smiles when Fat Freddie left and Cashley took over......in hind sight it may have been better the devil we knew, although could the next owners be any worse than the current one?
Need to get their backsides into gear....pre season started no manager, too many lazy sods on way too much money and new signings needed.....we are Newcastle fans and constantly live in hope, well here's hoping.
The frightning thought is that if they dont get a move on in 4 or 5 years they could be playing in the same league as Newcastle Benfield League and cup winners last year !
