Premier League - Sunderland biding time

Eurosport - Fri, 03 Jul 11:36:00 2009

Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn has insisted the club is yet to show its hand in the summer transfer market.

FOOTBALL Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn, who confirmed that American tycoon Ellis Short will assume 100 per cent control of the Premier League club - 0

The Black Cats have been linked with a lengthy list of potential targets in recent weeks with new owner Ellis Short ready to back manager Steve Bruce with a war chest of up to £50 million.

Darren Bent, Robbie Keane, Didier Zokora, Tom Huddlestone, Jermaine Pennant, Richard Dunne, Lee Cattermole and Titus Bramble are just a few of the men to have been touted as possible signings.

However, despite the likes of Michael Chopra and Greg Halford heading for pastures new, Bruce is determined to give the bulk of the squad he has inherited from Ricky Sbragia a chance to prove themselves as he finalises his shopping list.

Quinn told the Journal: "We haven't give up on any of our targets, but nor have we thrown our cards on the table to show our hand either. Steve has a few players that we would love to have, but he's very insistent on having a good look at what we have - and he's probably right.

"We have maybe got some players who weren't able to do well under a previous manager who might come alive, and suddenly you have got an asset you didn't realise you had. Rather than just trading for the sake of it, let's try to be intelligent and smart. We know what we need and where we need it."

  4. "Bruce is determined to give the squad he inherited a chance to prove themselves"? Stevie lad, just look at some of the video footage of last season, realise that 90% of them are @#$% and get rid, and bring in fresh blood otherwise its the same old relegation fight...

  9. There are players at SOL who NEED to be moved on; players like McShane, Murphy etc. It's no good waiting until all the quality players have been snapped up, then picking up the best of the discards. We've been down that road already, and it only leads to doing the trap-door dance every May.

  11. He who hesitates loses out. Sometimes delaying decisions can cost a club the difference between failure and success. Remember these players nearly got you relegated!!! With Steve Bruce you have a thoroughbred. But he can only do so much. Ricky Sbragia did well considering the clubs playing staff.
    Good luck for the season.
