Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn has insisted the club is yet to show its hand in the summer transfer market.
The Black Cats have been linked with a lengthy list of potential targets in recent weeks with new owner Ellis Short ready to back manager Steve Bruce with a war chest of up to £50 million.
Darren Bent, Robbie Keane, Didier Zokora, Tom Huddlestone, Jermaine Pennant, Richard Dunne, Lee Cattermole and Titus Bramble are just a few of the men to have been touted as possible signings.
However, despite the likes of Michael Chopra and Greg Halford heading for pastures new, Bruce is determined to give the bulk of the squad he has inherited from Ricky Sbragia a chance to prove themselves as he finalises his shopping list.
Quinn told the Journal: "We haven't give up on any of our targets, but nor have we thrown our cards on the table to show our hand either. Steve has a few players that we would love to have, but he's very insistent on having a good look at what we have - and he's probably right.
"We have maybe got some players who weren't able to do well under a previous manager who might come alive, and suddenly you have got an asset you didn't realise you had. Rather than just trading for the sake of it, let's try to be intelligent and smart. We know what we need and where we need it."

The three Wankateers.
Sometimes the best moves are the ones you don't make. With any luck Bruce knows this is a year round job and acts accordingly.
ian do u mean idiots that are in the premiership as opposed to losers in the championship
"Bruce is determined to give the squad he inherited a chance to prove themselves"? Stevie lad, just look at some of the video footage of last season, realise that 90% of them are @#$% and get rid, and bring in fresh blood otherwise its the same old relegation fight...
heslop448....yes lets wait and see?? if brucie does not sign some seriousley top players you will look even bigger idiots than you already are.
cameron u must be gutted all u geordies saying owen was finished and now he could be moving to the biggest club in the country where he will win trophies and score goals will make u even more of a laughing stock as for the scraps of the scraps lets wait and see who we sign at least we are not rushing into panic buying like keane did,oh and i just heard if this middle eastern group take over at the toon all the players are to be beaten on the feet with sharp bamboo canes until they take a 60% wage cut
'. . . . so bitter, twisted and very very booooooooring.'
Erm that's you bully-boy, anyway how you still here!
If you noticed, i ain't been visiting these pages lately, but you are still infesting the NUFC pages with your posts of poison and hatred . . . . why?
I might be booooooooooooooring, but if you notice, there is no bitterness, malice or anything twisted in my remark, just good old-fashioned banter - you should try it . . .bully-boy!
Change the record Cameron w, you are just so bitter, twisted and very very booooooooring. Enough said.
There are players at SOL who NEED to be moved on; players like McShane, Murphy etc. It's no good waiting until all the quality players have been snapped up, then picking up the best of the discards. We've been down that road already, and it only leads to doing the trap-door dance every May.
mighty wolves what wood have you come out of?. ya in with the big boys now see if ya still eating with us next may. red&white army. FTM
He who hesitates loses out. Sometimes delaying decisions can cost a club the difference between failure and success. Remember these players nearly got you relegated!!! With Steve Bruce you have a thoroughbred. But he can only do so much. Ricky Sbragia did well considering the clubs playing staff.
Good luck for the season.
Franwal
Scraps of the scraps of the scraps; even the mighty Wolves dine at a bigger table than safc.
