Eurosport-Yahoo! blogger Simon Reed believes women's tennis is at a low point thanks to the Williams sisters.
Women's tennis has been in the doldrums recently, with the presence of the Williams sisters required to give tournaments any prestige.
I am optimistic that at the end of the year things could improve and return to a competitive environment, but at the moment the American duo are dominant.
Women's tennis is riding a bad wave at the moment. By next year, however, that wave will be on the rise again: it tends to be a cyclical process.
What has happened to the women's game since Justine Henin retired is the Williams sisters have been left to control proceedings.
Maria Sharapova will be a threat when she recovers fully from injury and Kim Clijsters will return to provide a test, but I am not sure about Jelena Jankovic or Ana Ivanovic.
There is still no doubt in my mind that Serena Williams is the number one player in the world, except possibly on grass where her sister Venus is slightly better.
The rest of the women are, I am afraid, quite a long way behind the pair.
I have always thought that when the Williams sisters are fit, they are easily the best players in the women's game, and today proved that.
The two semi-finals were not a surprise at all, with only the superb performance of Elena Dementieva giving us an exciting match.
I expected the Russian to succumb to nerves once more, but to her credit she did not - and it was a fantastic encounter.
Dinara Safina's world number one ranking is a bit deceptive, given that she has never won a Grand Slam, but it is certainly not her fault that the system is like that.
Some people are criticising her for the fact that she should not be there, but she is consistent on the Tour; to blame her is ridiculous.
Safina has clearly had better results than everyone else this year to achieve that ranking, but I think the system should be changed to reward Grand Slams more.
The weighting of the points system must be more heavily in favour of those players, like the Williams sisters, who perform on the biggest stage.
It is weird that Serena could potentially win the Australian Open and Wimbledon, yet still remain in second spot: that cannot be right.
Safina has never been any good when playing on grass courts, and it was frankly surprising that she even made it this far in the tournament.
I could see her drubbing today coming from a mile off, and it would have been the same if she had been playing Serena instead of Venus.
Safina is simply not a good mover on grass courts, but I would not be surprised if she came back at the US Open and proved a major threat.

Looking ahead to the women's final on Saturday, I may have to switch horses.
I am not one to change my mind very often, but I am moving towards Venus Williams for the title instead of Serena.
I have backed Serena to win the tournament all the way through in an all-Williams final, but the way Venus played today, you would be a brave man not to back her.
It is impossibly difficult to call with the way they are both striking the ball.
I think people are wrong to suggest that it may be a boring final, because I actually believe that it could be very exciting indeed.
Because the Williams sisters have been around for so long, people are now able to associate with one more than the other, and they have very distinct supporters on either side.
Any alternative to this final could well have been a disaster, with either Safina or Dementieva freezing on the big stage, and that would have been a complete nightmare.
An all-Williams final is probably the best draw possible, and let us hope that it is as exciting as the first semi-final was today.

Just because Reed's analytical lens is skewed to see only the lopsided match yesterday should not reduce the women's tennis to "doldrums". The big servicing Serbian was no match for Federer, and I could not watch farther because of the gap in skill. Serena and Dementieva's match was what Reed swore neither to see nor to recognise. Women's tennis is alive and kicking even when the Williams sisters will be gone.
The women's game is fine! One of the first things many men need to do, is be honest with themselves! Often, they find pleasure in "certain women!" For example, it was almost as if Martina N. was bad for the game, and Chris E-L was good. Announcers consistently mentioned "Chris looked like the girl next door." In a different way, the same has happened with a player like Maria S. Many men "desire to see her (play), but it's not always because of her tennis! As far as Justine Henin goes, I think that she was a great winner, but often when people begin to see their game diminish, it is far easier to leave at or near the top, than to try and fight for a year to make a semi-final. I think Venus and Serena both dealt with injuries, strong competitors, and potential burnout, to make it through the end of this decade near the top of the game. At the beginning of this decade, they were still rising stars, now they have endured and are closer to the end of their careers than the beginning. It will be a long time before there is another African American champion, but there may never be 2 sisters at the top of the tennis world like this again in our lifetimes! Appreciate them while they are here. They are very athletic, extremely intelligent, and also represent women, the U.S., and African American inner city youth very well. We often look for a good book or movie that has a great story. How can we not recognize a great non fiction real life story. A family of limited income, producing 2 champions in a sport that usually does not have people who are not prosperous succeeding
my problem isnt with the sister act, its the actual state of the womens game, its s h i t e! the williams are carrying it at the moment, without them the sport would fold i'm sure, and i still am not a fan of either of them.
yeah i remember how those cartoons confused us about ostriches burying their heads in the sand but, when i saw them in florida lowering their heads to the floor, I actually asked and was told that it was an aggressive stance, so why would they bury it 'stupid'.......lol.
I do not agree that the women's game is in doldrums. Federer might be surpassing Pete's record on sunday bt then no one will remember that Nadal was absent in this year's event. The Williams play whoever that is placed before them. Give it up to them.
OMG Eurosport UK has finally done something about the deranged spammer.....hoorah!
Apologies to you again cameron and i hope bricerod does the same, granted you are clever with those words and one does tend to 'shoot from the hip' against you. I am now suspecting you are one of those district recorders stationed up in geordieland who looks in here from time to time just to observe and to keep mentally active (probably whilst mulling over a cryptic puzzle of sorts). I have indeed noticed the improved objectivity in your comments.
Elaine Simpson-Long, don't tell me there is still a chilled out 60s hippy left out there?.........lol, I haven't stopped singing that 'are you going to san francisco' song by scott mckenzie since i read your last comment. Well, groovy baby I'd say and ride on sister!
Totally disagree with this article. You cana argue the women's game has a better future when you look at young girls , wozniacki, azarenka, lisicki and so fourth. The only time the william sisters dominate is on grass. Other slams are up for grabs and if serena wins the hardcourts then she is too good. When federer dominates everything it wasnt boring it was because he is a genuious. when nadal dominates claycourts it wasnt boring it was because he was claycourt specialist. Serious double standards and not given the respect the william sister deserves.
Stupid article!!!
how is federer beating everyone in strait sets not boring? if nadal isn't there they should just give him the trophy the first night. thats my doldrum!
ajpbolton, whether you like their style of tennis or not, it does not matter. All the players in the world cannot always have the same style. Each and every player is characterized by their uniqueness that make them different because we are all different. They aren't playing to satisfy you but to win grand slams. And know this, gentleman that you cannot change your style if it does produce some fruit. That's why a coach will never change his training methods and even change a winning team if they keep winning. A professional sportsman practice sports to win. Elegance, finesse, guile and touch are only good if they help you win otherwise change your style. Any sportsman who is aware of his qualities and strength will work and focus on them and that's what these sisters and others are doing. When you are professional, you think professionally and do things professionally. The style does not matter but a win matters the most. Thanks.
one thing pple must realise is that when the wiliams were struggling, media experts were there to thrash them, but remember, to have longetivity you must keep ur body and they realised it a long time ago... sharapova will slow down on her tournaments becos her body is ailing. Roger won 14 GS and no one is tired of seeing his face... serena only has 10 and we are tired??? pls gimme a break she is top class
i find that biased, venus has 7gs just half of federers so why complain. mary joe and co are so biased the want the williams to fail but GOD is watching them becos it is a tough ask for girls frm crompton to dominate a white sport.
applaud them now coz they wont be there forever and you will be proud to say you watched them play
as for me, i support them everyday and wish them well and hope venus wins!! Go girls!
All I know is that if it was 2 British girls were dominating the game the way the Williams are at the moment- he would never complain that womens tennis was in doldrums. What a cyincal piece of @#$%
After reading this article I started doubting the seriousness of eurosport!!! It must be run a bunch neos
Simon Reed is a narrow minded fool! How many grandslams have Nadal and Federer won between them over the past 6-7 years . Its funny how he NEVER mentions that the mens game is at a low point. How he got a job on this website I'll never know.
Frith you were right about ostriches, but it's just a colloquial "proverb". Some peolpe might never had spotted it!!
This reporter is a bit stupid........this a competition.well,if you are fed-up of seeing two black people, then thats what you should.do you understand the word dol, therefore, the best comes on top.believe me,if was a different way of competing i.e race.....these two will never hold a racket based on your inference.do you know what doldrums means?it a state of inactivity or depression.what a load of rubbish.tell me, how many sisters on this planet would ever play at this level....Mate,you don`t deserve to be paid for such a bad spin.
Some guys need to chill. But tennis is still a rather teas and cucumber sandwiches game in certain parts of the world. Unlike other countries (i.e Ol' Eastern Bloc)like those guys hardly have enough courts to go around, but they practice hard. So I reckon it's only a matter of time before they produce champions like Djorkovic. It's highly unlikely that yo'd see an (ethnic minority)kid playing tennis in some deprived area of the Uk or Africa, as a) they don't have the facilities, b)One has to pay to use those facilities. How and why should I pa if I can't even feed myself let alond put the clothes on my kids backs & c) It's cheaper to play football. It costs less and you can play anywhere without being charged. And I forgot I can't afford to get my white trainers dirty playing tennis on a court which probably has potholes as the have to last me a couple of years before I pass them down to my next sibling and he'll carry on the trend. KULA BEER
Ummmm, you do know that ostriches don't really bury there heads in the sand right?
There is nothing wrong with womens tennis. No more so than mens tennis with Federer and Nadal always winning.
I wanna see the best of the best in the final and thats what I get and I love it!
By The Way I think This article is telling the truth, but as usual some of us prefer to bury our heads in the sand LIKE OSTRICHES rather than face up to the STONE, COLD, BARE, and HARD......FACTS!!! No one ever remembers second best which is something I think England tennis has to take into account as well.
who lets the dog out?
