Andy Roddick earned another chance to cast off the 'one-Slam wonder' tag he feared would live with him forever when steely nerve and a golden serve gave him a Wimbledon semi-final win over Andy Murray.
It was as if the Roddick of old was back on Centre Court as the American sixth seed played with the fearless swagger that took him to the US Open title as a 21-year-old in 2003.
His reward for a 6-4 4-6 7-6 7-6 victory over the home favourite and third seed is a third appearance in the final at Wimbledon and once again it will be against Roger Federer, the man who denied him in 2004 and 2005.
Few had expected him to survive against Murray, four years his junior at 22, but the extra hours of fitness work Roddick has put in under new coach Larry Stefanki paid off.
Roddick hired Stefanki, who took Chile's Fernando Gonzalez to the 2007 Australian Open final, after failing to go beyond the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam last season.
At the time he wondered if he had a future at the top end of the game but under Stefanki's guidance he lost around six kilos, to noticeable effect in the way he moves around court.
"This off-season, we said, 'You know what, if you're not gonna be up there, let's at least not wonder. Let's prepare yourself and give yourself every opportunity'," said Roddick.
"I did work real hard and was committed, and have been committed from everything to diet to sleep to everything.
"So I certainly gave myself every opportunity to succeed."
He used his most potent weapon to good effect on Friday, serving a 225kph ace in the first game to draw gasps from the crowd and finishing with a first serve percentage of 75.
At the match's conclusion Roddick sank down, scarcely able to believe he had won, before standing to applaud the crowd and celebrate with a discreet pump of his first.
The performance was all the more remarkable given that he had come through a draining five-setter against Lleyton Hewitt in the quarter-finals and came into the tournament still feeling the effects of an ankle sprain suffered at Queen's.
If he is to become the first American man to win at Wimbledon since Pete Sampras in 2000 he will have to play the match of his life against Federer, the five-times champion who is aiming for a record 15th Grand Slam title.
"I'd love to delay it (Federer's record) for another grand Slam," Roddick said.

poor Roddick
Hi commentators-why do the professional commentators pretend so hard that they like the Williams sisters? The crowd certainly doesn't, and the tv stats dropped terribly when the two reached the finals. Even the American Mary Carillo said during the live NBC broadcast that the crowd was polite and hushed, and there was no atmosphere in the match to compare with what we can expect today-a huge let down for the tennis fans around the world when the two sisters meet in a grand slam final.
Yeah, would be nice to see A-Rod win at last. Set fire to the grass in the first set last time they played here but still got nowhere. Pity, cos as well as being a good player he's a nice and witty guy. Let's hope he brings his A game with him again. As for Murray, the stats are right - not enough first serves in, and altho he managed to get a racket on most of Roddick's, couldn't realy do much damage or even get the bal back in play - hence fewer aces, but more winners. Torn a bit by Fed - don't dislike him, but sometimes you'd like him to at least find it tougher and not be such a baby or a lucky Leo - he does seem to forget that only 2 months ago he was nowhere, yet now it's like he's unstoppable. Hope it's a good, close match, either way.
PS The score can't be 8-6 in the 3rd set - we have tiebreaks these days until the 5th!
shirt pulling red face RODDICK should win easily & excite the crowd
especially those spectators who paid £ 2000 for tickets expecting to watch Andy Murray ...!
it's ur turn roddick .... u diserve it for all what u did in ur carear ...... but we know that u r gentleman ... if u lose for the third time u will not cry like mister crying baby federer !!!
Thank goodness the arrogant boring scotsman is out say us English.
cap twitching ~~ shirt pulling after every point Roddick should excite the crowd forEASY WIN
Fed is just too slow nowadays ...!
attaha, hantuchova is hardly ageing! she is only 26, same age as serena williams and 3 years younger than venus. i was personally very impressed with laura robson and believe she has a very bright future. andy murray is over hyped, but he will win grand slam events in the future. nadal, i believe, will be prone to injury while federer is 27 and i do not believe he has many grand slams left in him. this will allow murray to win grand slams by default
well theres always the wheelchair to be won lol
very good in reading crowd's thoughts when shouted go andy!
If you believe in British press and the hypes then you can believe anything. They are antihuman. That they support Andy is an ill-wind for this boy. The crowd also are not good crowd they are hypocrites adn evil people wishing his down fall, wanting the down fall of Murray. A day before the semi, Murray was playing football in the court instead of concentrating and relaxing. Pride goes before a fall and this is what happened to him. He was actually playing Federa in the final and not Roddick. He is so obsessed with beating Federa forgetting he has to first beat others before meeting him. he has now two good records, First ever British player to win Queens and failed to play final at Wimbledon. And British press is consolling themselves with the fact that Murray is just 22 and has more GS titles to win. World no 3 British no 1 can't play in wimbledon final ever for the past 71 years.. Complete farce. People expected the william sisters to play final,. They lived up to the expectation, by winning the singles and doubles. Now we have another female British, Australian born Laura Robson. The nation needed somebody to win something and so she had to play two ways; First she played aging Hantuchova fomer world no 5 and managed and game and lost, then she automatically qualified for the junior to defend it instead of graduating to senior level, she was demoted. She failed the hurdle with excuse of back injury. She lost in two fronts; but the only consolation we have is that she is just 15 and as usual Murray is just 22.
Roddick I don't usually watch in the crowd any sports but because I want you to win, I will be cheering you. My prayer is for you to stop Federa and beat him 6-4, 7-5, 8-6. Goodluck as I am praying for you..Please do it for the sake of men's tennis, just like Nadal stopped him.. Federa is a great player but not a humble person.
Roddick I pray you beat Federa. Know that he has stopped you winning GS titles for so long. Just relax and get inspiration from the Williamses how to react in extreme situation. Serena was match point down when she reacted like a champion and got back to play and won.
Fed vs Rod xD Just eat it !!
It is good to see a final with two GS winners, not just a media-hyped person to play Fed. Roddick did some great job and him being in the final is great achievement and patience with bravoure and mental strength. Both of them have equal chances and why not? They are real champs and humble guys. Roddick has shown consistency in as much as Federer, despite their low moments. At least, this wimbledon was a good one, in pite of Rafa's absence. Whoever wins will deserve it and will be the new Wimbledon King! On paper, Federer is the favorite but on court the papers are torn!
"Despite all the thumb downs for onelazybum's comment, I have to agree that Federer's dominance is due, at least in part, to the lack of 'champion mentality' in this current crop of players. Only the top 4 display this mentality with any consistency."
This is insane, like you have any clue what "champion mentality" is. And then there is this crazy part where you believe you have the magic to see who has this champion mentality. And apparently, precicely the top4 players for the last year has this mentality.
""Few had expected him to survive against Murray, .... " . That's foolish. I had no doubt he would beat Murray."
lol, so I guess you bet everything you had on roddick for 4.1? So disgusting, so clueless
Lets all just hope its a good final tennis fans. The head to head 18 -2 in Rogers favour so will be very tough for Andy.Their last 3 matches have gone to 3 sets lets hope this one go's to 5 sets.Good luck guys.
very well said andy, the benefits of the new regime was so evident at that late night chat show with jonathan ross last year, I thought then that your tennis will lift up again. Now you are so much more relaxed, a very witty guy and full of humility and poise. its a bonus that your tennis has also improved. however as roger also has all those attributes, i hope the better man on the day wins, good luck.
For all you statisticians out there, the numbers from the Murray/Roddick encounter make for interesting reading.
Murray hit more aces, more winners, and less unforced errors. The critical factor was indeed the 1st serve. First serve percentage for Murray was 52%, compared to Roddick's 75% (It was 86% when Murray beat Ferrero at Queens 2009). While Murray was more succesful in winning points behind his 1st serve (83% vs 77%), because his service percentage was relatively poor, it translates as 63 points vs 79 points.
Strangely enough, as poor as Murray's 2nd serve looked, he was more successful behind it than was Roddick behind his own 2nd serve - just (53% second serve points won vs 51%). Looking at the return of serve, Murray's return game was slightly poorer than Roddick's (30% receiving points won vs 32%) - significant when it's meant to be one of the strongest aspects of his game.
