Manchester City manager Mark Hughes has been told he is wasting his time trying to prise John Terry from Chelsea.
Such was the strong tone of the London club's rebuttal it appears Hughes will have to look elsewhere in an attempt to beef up his defence.
"We can confirm we have completely rejected an offer from Manchester City for John Terry," a statement on Chelsea's website read. "It was made clear to City, for a second time following an approach last season, that we would not entertain any conversation on the subject."
The statement continued: "At the time, John also reiterated his total commitment to Chelsea.
"We would like to make it clear, and will not do so again, that John is not for sale."
Joleon Lescott has been linked with a move to Eastlands but Everton's response should an approach be made is likely to be the same as Chelsea's.
Hughes is looking to do more business at the top end of the transfer market after securing the services of Roque Santa Cruz and Gareth Barry.
In addition to Terry, the former Blackburn boss is also keeping tabs on strikers Samuel Eto'o and Carlos Tevez.

THE RAGS OF FOOTBALL REPORTING THEY TALK A LOAD OF RUBBISH CA'NT SEE TO SIDES
TO A STORY
Stuart... Eto'o is the best striker in the world and you are suggesting it would be a mistake to buy him?
Duh! Who wants the greatest striker? Not stuart.
Its nowt to do with most of the players as they are all capable, its the manager and back room staff that are the problem.
The quicker Hughes is booted and Mancini is brought in the better everything will be.
Money doesnt buy success? Tell that to Man United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Blackburn [1992-96] .
How dare you mention Kaka and the great Terry in the same sentence

Ronaldo, Rooney, Ferdinand all went for money in fact you can say that about any player. The problem with City at the moment they are not in the Champions League soon as that happens which it will be alot more difficult than you think we will see who comes to Eastlands. I still say the only decent buy so far has been Barry. Eto would be a mistake for he is in it for the greed Tevez just wants to play football week in week out. While a good solid Defender is imperative Lescott would be a good buy. We used to have a good defence until Distin went. The youngsters need to pull up the metal and dig in but they need a experienced Champions League Defender to guide them we are best off looking abroad like Maicon as a left back
Good to see City far more active and far more succesful in the transfer market this summer. Players understand where the real success will be over the next 10 years and its not at United. Their free-signing of Owen smacks of a club that is skint ( £900million in debt) and also one that can no longer attract (or even keep) their better players. So its back to the 60s and 70s lads when City ruled the Manchester roost ...well worth waiting for I think you'll agree

As they say, no harm in trying.
Naturally once the news leak, and they get rejected, they look like mugs, but at the same time, if they anaged to pull such a move off, just like with Robinho, then it's a real coup.
Man city are shameless, no matter how many times they get rejected they go back. No self respect. Kaka did the same, Terry, Berbatov the list is endless. Face facts you will only attract players like Robinho, tevez who love £££ more then sucess.
