Grimsby have signed defender Paul Linwood from Chester on a three-year deal.
The former Tranmere trainee, 25, caught the eye of Mariners boss Mike Newell when playing against Grimsby for the Blues last season.
Newell told the club's official website: "He's a good solid defender and he is going to bring more competition for places.
"He was outstanding against us when we played Chester towards the end of last season."
Meanwhile, the Mariners are locked in talks with former Leeds midfielder Peter Sweeney and are aiming to sign him on a two-year deal by Monday.
