Croatia playmaker Luka Modric can help fire Tottenham up the Barclays Premier League table next season, according to compatriot Vedran Corluka.
Spurs recovered from a disastrous opening few months to finish the last campaign strongly under Harry Redknapp, reaching the Carling Cup final at Wembley and eventually securing eighth place.
Corluka feels Modric, 24, can play a central role in driving Spurs on. "It was difficult at the start because it was his first time playing in England and nobody in the team was playing well at that point," defender Corluka told the club's official website, www.tottenhamhotspur.com.
He added: "When the team started to play well he showed why he is one of the best young midfielders in the world.
"Hopefully he will be even better next season because he knows how other teams play against us and the surroundings, so it will be a lot easier."
Corluka added: "It is hard for a foreign player at first because everything is so much faster than in other leagues, as well as the physical strength.
"But after half a season, you are used to these things. If you have the same ability of the other players, then eventually you should be able to compete."
Redknapp is keen to bolster his squad ahead of the new campaign.
Spurs are understood to be ready to listen to offers for strikers Roman Pavlyuchenko, a target for old club Spartak Moscow, and Darren Bent, said to be interesting Sunderland, while the future of former England winger David Bentley may also be away from White Hart Lane.

Tottenham Hotspurs (OUT) - Bent, ZOKORA, Gilberto, Boateng,Chimbonda (why did we bring him back)( LOAN) -
Taarabt, Rose, Dos Santos, Bale,Bostock, Huddlestone, Gunter. And Bring( IN) - Niko Kranjcar, Marcus Berg AND BRING BACK MIDO.
I agree...we have spent loads of cash over the past year...you forgot to add Bentley who was £15M. We have loads of young players with talent and potential...what we have to do now is stick with those players and get the best out of them...buying new players is not always the answer.
quite agree melliott650
Perfectly correct Jonny D. It is nice to see Spurs running at a profit and not like 'The Big 4' who all have ridiculous debts. Will be fantastic when the new stadium is sorted and then we can push on and go for that top 4 place. Who knows it may even be possible next season. I dont think we will but if Harry had been in charge all last season we would have finished a comfortable 5th so we can but hope.
You fool
Defoe £16m
Modric 15.8m
Keane £15m
Pavlyuchenko £14m
Palacios £12m
And that is in 1 year. How can you possibly call him tight. We have spent plenty of cash. i think it fair enough to now be a bit cheap as we are also building a new stadium and are not in europe next season.
as spurs supporters we all know we will be linked with every player who looks good, but levy is such a @#$% and tight one at that, we will end up shopping on the last day of the transfer window for bargain basemant has beens
