Mowbray biding his time

Fri 03 Jul, 10:21 AM

Celtic manager Tony Mowbray has assured his new players he will give them time to prove themselves before moving anyone on.

The former West Brom boss hopes to persuade Nancy striker Marc-Antoine Fortune to choose Celtic, after confirming that Paul Hartley and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink would not be offered new contracts

"We are all working very, very hard to make these things happen," Mowbray said.

He added: "It's never easy. Players are just coming back from holiday, it's the same with managers and coaches.

"We have made a lot of calls and a lot of contact and a lot of people have spoken to me as well.

"As I say to them, I want to look at the players. I don't want on day one to say yes, he can go out.

"I need to see them and see what their characters are. We have put markers down, we are further advanced with some potential signings than we are with others.

"That's why you have got to have options, it's no good putting all your eggs in one basket."

Mowbray is carefully building up his personal relationships with his new players in an attempt to elicit their peak performances.

He added: "How do they react to a bit of cajoling? They are human beings and the best way to get the best out of them is to know which buttons to push when the going gets tough."

  1. Welder, when you are talking about Lennon being forced on to Big Mowbray... If he didn't like the situation, he could have just said no to the job...
Wasn't Ferguson forced onto Le Guen? When he refused to play him the fans and Board (Well Murray) decided to stick with the 'Rangers minded Person' over a manager... And lets be honest - Results never went your way but the football was far better under Le Guen. You are slagging Celtic off for Choosing 'Celtic Minded' people when in fact, Rangers do the same - It's Fan pressure... Just the goldfish bowl of Football in Scotland.
Seem to remember that when Neil Lennon came in, we were struggling before, but things seemed to change almost instantly and the players looked happier - So he has something.

  5. why should nobray listen to lemmon, after all he was not even given the choice when bringing in his own backroom staff as lemmon was forced apon him, does that sound like the situation a new manager should accept or is it the choice of a boards pick of just a yes man with only a one year contract in place, who after another years failed attempt at winning the title then the septic board can work on one of the other choices they had in mind for the job in the first place with time and money to spare?????

  9. #11 Dont think any1 is sayin that mowgli shouldnt listen to lemon, but do you think he is the best man to be given advice??? ok he may have been a gud player at celtic, but was pretty @#$% at notts forrest, and he is sellik minded, which may or may not be a gud thing(heart ruling head & all that) I admire his passion but as a source of player potential??? think you barking up the wrong tree bud,if you gonna relay on him to make sound judgements, now I may be wrong, but I wouldnt want him to be making choices to ma new management team, afterall,he is a bit of a @#$%,better off with some1 who doesnt have green tinted specs on,all the time, but like I say I might be wrong

From METZ, on Fri 3 Jul 2:54PM
  10. yes nok they probably do give advice, and i am sure the great man wattie takes it on board, after all they have given him advice before in other football situations and never got their team relegated-------can nobrays say that about his backroom staff?????????

  11. What a surprise - A Celtic Story and yet again English Samantha has put in an appearance... I'm not saying you can't comment on Celtic Stories, but look at Metz - He can articulate a response... You keep going on about how it's a pish league and Celtic are this and that, and yet you're ALWAYS funking on here... Come oan Sam, what team do you support, I'm dying to know... Or do you just have a stick up yer erse about everything Celtic?
As for Welder to the Genitals, what's wrong with Big Mowbray making up his own mind? Of course Neil Lennon will tell him who he thinks should be in the team, but as a new manager - You are the one the decision rests with... Do you think Kenny McDowall or Licky McCoist don't give their opinions to Waller at the sidelines?

From NokturnalKelt, on Fri 3 Jul 2:39PM
  12. Welder, when your right, your right,3 out the door,2 no wantin to sign(if fortune was wantin to go,he`d be there by now) hope they keep lemon on the payroll, coz hes worth at least 6 points to us,Follow!! Follow!!!

  13. what a load of @#$%!!!!!!!!!! lennon is still there to tell this muppet nobray who is dross and who is drosser in the team, personaly i dont think there is much to seperate the best dross from the worst but until he can bring in his own dross, if any, then he is stuck with the dross that failed last season
