Owen "ready for United"

Fri, 03 Jul 09:14:25 2009

Manchester United are to sign former England striker Michael Owen on a free transfer, according to reports.

Owen's Newcastle contract lapsed on July 1 but although the former Liverpool and Real Madrid striker apparently remained eager to stay in the Barclays Premier League, it appeared only the likes of Stoke and Hull were ready to make a concrete offer.

They now appear to have been joined by reigning champions United, who have lost star man Cristiano Ronaldo and Argentina striker Carlos Tevez since the end of last season.

Owen suffered from a series of injury problems during his stint at St James' Park and Sir Alex Ferguson is thought to be lining up a pay-as-you-play deal for the forward. The 29-year-old was believed to be on around £110,000 at Newcastle, for whom he scored 10 goals as they were relegated to the Coca-Cola Championship last season, but would be happy to take a reduced basic salary for a top-four club.

United have yet to officially comment on the deal but it is understood that their pursuit of Owen is already gathering pace. Owen is believed to be travelling to Manchester on Friday for a medical, having already undergone an assessment of his troublesome knee on Thursday.

If United's medical staff give him the all-clear, Owen could join former club Liverpool's arch-rivals as soon as next week.

  4. be good business if he joins... I know hes an ex pool player but hes had a decent enough break at real and castle to ease it i think.. if you look at his injuries which people are most concerned about there all from when he was a newcastle.. perhaps manutd can keep him fit and as hes on a free what we got to lose, he will be happy to warm the bench and play in the games berby/rooney dont play in, get him fit and shooting again and could be a nice little card up fergies sleeve.. fox in the box.. dont judge it till weve seen the outcome and lets face it if he scores for than 5 goals then hes equalled teves`s contribution last term.. the goals will come.. out of 79 appearances at castle he scored 30 odd and 158 i think at pool in 350 games or so.. so 50% return so we will see eh..

  5. If Owen proves succesful at manu,it will highlight dramatically all that was wrong at NUFC.
SAF Judgement cannot be questioned,if he thinks Owen can do the job,Im'e sure he has excellent reasons for believing so,a striker needs only a second to produce,so even if he is used for eg,supersub,he may well have enough to get the result.SAF is no fool.
