Rush backs Owen to succeed at United

Fri 03 Jul, 02:37 PM

Liverpool legend Ian Rush has admitted he would have preferred to see Michael Owen return to Anfield.

The England striker is set to secure a shock switch to Liverpool's rivals Manchester United after his contract at Newcastle expired.

The move will send shockwaves through the game but Rush knows that Owen has not been courted by Liverpool because he is not needed by boss Rafael Benitez.

"Personally, I'd like to have seen him at Liverpool but they haven't lost their best strikers," Rush told Sky Sports News. "He (manager Rafael Benitez) will be happy with what he's got."

  1. Great move Michael - I'm sure you'll enjoy coming back to see us at Anfield...............and don't worry, we'll give you a nice warm welcome when you walk out onto our hallowed turf wearing Scum colours...................and after we've kicked you all over the pitch for 90 mins you'll spend the rest of the season keeping the Physio's bench warm.

  2. it is quite prophetic that michael is already talking of regaining his england place. One of the least endearing elements of his character has always been his lack of affiliation to a club ... he has been an england player first and a club player second since he first broke through.... that is why he was never afforded the same affection at anfield as gerrard. This wont matter so much at UTd because they are less a football club and more a franchise. They may claim to be the biggest club in the world, but then Mcdonalds is the biggest restaurant... size is not an indicator of class!

  4. Listen guys

Remember how much Owen cost LFC when he wouldn't renew his contract
    on his terms?????

How much did it cost Newcastle in wages while injured???
Whats he done in the last four years. NOTHING for the amount of money he earned

Owen is a horrible LITTLE man only interested in himself.

  5. Owen to United, yet another bit of managerial magic from the maestro:
Owen to score the winner for United at Anfield. How good will that be!
Next Mascherano & Alonso to leave Rafa up the swanee.
Beaneathus by name, beneath us buy nature. I thank you.

  6. michael shouldn't of gone 2 united he should of come bac 2 liverpool, but he felt tht goin 2 man utd woz the only way 2 save his career as they r 1 of the biggest clubs in history... i am sad 2 c him go there as i am a liverpool fan and would love 2 c him come bac and play 4 us again as it would b a gr8 mix wiv him, torres, gerrard etc but he chose 2 go there. man utd r quite lucky 4 gettin him cause they don't hav ronaldo or tevez anymore and i think tht woz a bit stupid of fergie getting rid of ronaldo as he is their key player. anywayz i wish michael the best of luck at utd and hope 2 c him soon bac in liverpool where he belongs! his spirit will b in liverpool 4 eva and always. GD LUCK MICHAEL!

  8. This is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO funny listening to Liverfool fans (and I use that word fans lightly) slagging off even their best former players, trying to convince themselves Owen will fail, well he was pool through and through but got sh'gged by that halfwit Spanish clown Benitez sold to his paella eating cousins who sold him to a team who were half way round the U- bend.So tell me WHAT DO YOU EXPECT HIM TO DO WHEN THE CHAMPIONS ASK HIM TO PLAY FOR THEM??? Say sorry but I want to hang around in case my mate Steve G convinces the Kop to buy me back like they did with Robbie Foul-up HA DON'T MAKE ME LAUGH YOU JUST CAN'T STAND THE FACT THAT YOU SOLD ONE OF THE BEST PLAYERS YOU EVER HAD BEFORE HE EVEN REACHED HIS PRIME!!!!!!
Well Boo Hoo I hope he sticks one in the net at the kop end and has the BIGGEST LAUGH OF ALL.

YOU WONT HAVE TO GO THROUGH ANY MINUTES SILENCES HERE IN MANCHESTER, WE DON'T SEEK THE NATIONS SYMPATHY

  10. have a faith in Owen. For Manu fan, don't judge him during pre-season, judge him at the end of dis coming season..

  11. He was a liverpool guy, but he has never been the same since he left us. he has very little loyalty like so many players now just his need of money. To go to ManU after playing for liverpool is a disgrace to many of the fans who supported him at anfield not matter how many moves he had since then, Fergies rule of no player moving from them to us is not ok but the other way round regarless of time and changes is ok to him. Sorry Michael but I cannot support you move or wish you luck , you should have more respect for the Liverpool fans who supported you from the beginning.

  16. Michael Owen was born in Chester not Liverpool and he was brought up in Wales. So he is not a traitor to Liverpool FC. Like many other pro footballers he moves between clubs as events change and this move could resurrect his International career if he can keep injury free. Ian Rush has hit the nail on the head when he recognises Owens value to any team by stating that he would have liked to see him back at Anfield.
