Rush backs Owen to succeed at United

Fri 03 Jul, 02:37 PM

Liverpool legend Ian Rush has admitted he would have preferred to see Michael Owen return to Anfield.

The England striker is set to secure a shock switch to Liverpool's rivals Manchester United after his contract at Newcastle expired.

The move will send shockwaves through the game but Rush knows that Owen has not been courted by Liverpool because he is not needed by boss Rafael Benitez.

"Personally, I'd like to have seen him at Liverpool but they haven't lost their best strikers," Rush told Sky Sports News. "He (manager Rafael Benitez) will be happy with what he's got."

SUCH A SHAME

  6. As Owen approached his last season when at Liverpool, he said he didn't want to talk about a new contract until the end of it but that they had nothing to worry about. Liverpool sussed what he was doing (unlike Newcastle) and were forced to sell him for £8mil, less than half of his value at the time, or he would stuck it up them even bigger style and gone for free with an even bigger signing on fee.
When Madrid decided to let him go they wanted £16mil and Liverpool wouldn't pay that for a player who had fleeced them a year earlier and offered Madrid their money back. We on the other hand had no axe to grind and payed the money which was the going rate at the time for a player of that calibre (a very different version of events that were posted on here a couple of days ago by a few know it all wonkas who I dont need to identify, we all know who they are).
Anyway, his plan succeeded with us and to be honest, had he gone anywhere else he would have done the same thing again. In my opinion he won't get away with any of that at Man U. If agents demand money for this and that, Fergie will have them down the road and if Owen doesn't get his finger out, he will be out.
I have to say that I think Fergie will get the best out of Owen and England could benefit from that but I also dont expect him to play many more than 20 or so games for them a season. With the injuries and surgery he has endured, we will never see the old Owen again, it's not possible.

  15. This is interesting...Liverpool fans will want to slag off Utd as usual, but to do so they will have to run down one of their ex players while also disagreeing with another one of their all time greats.
