Jenas: Spurs Are Genuine Contenders

Sun 03 Aug, 01:09 PM

Midfielder Jermaine Jenas insists the quality in the Tottenham squad will help them come close to breaking into the top four of the Premier League this season.

Although the club have lost striker Robbie Keane to Liverpool, while Dimitar Berbatov is being linked with a move away from White Hart Lane, boss Juande Ramos has attracted David Bentley, Giovani dos Santos, Luca Modric and Heurelho Gomes to the club.

And Jenas, capped 18 times by England, believes the "abundance of quality" in the squad gives the north London club a fighting chance of challenging Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool at the top of the table.

The midfielder explained: "Getting into the Champions League is not going to be easy.

"To break into that quartet is tough - but a number of quality players have come in and we'll be doing our best to get amongst it."

The 25-year-old is impressed with manager Juande Ramos, adding on Sky Sports News: "As soon as he came you could see why he was so successful at other clubs.

"It's been a pleasure to work with him."

  1. The problem with Spurs is that they are always overrating themselves and make loud-mouth predictions. I don't think this season will be a lot different than the last one having in my mind the fact that their defense is shaky and knowing that they've bought only offensive players so far. They don't have good wing-backs, end of the story

  3. i think jenas is a bit deluded. title contenders you aint. last season you had berbatov, keane, bent and defoe now what have you got? defoe left for pompey, berbatov will be at manure by aug 31st, keane has joined the mighty reds leaving you with bent and lets be honest the 9 goals hes scored in the last week have been against poor or experimental sides. only thing you'll be contending for is top half of the league if your lucky!

  5. Well Tottenham you are a pile of s**t when you compare yourselves to team's like Liverpool and Arsenal. While they are alway's in the champion's league tottenham have had a windfall or player's and money and will still not be able to break into the top 4.Although i hope you can get a higher place than Everton this year.

  7. Yet again, a spurs player giving it the same old cliche as has been the last five seasons or so..."We are gonna break into the top four"...Why can't they just keep quiet and play, see what happens cos every season brings the humiliation of mouthing what they are gonna do, and yet never quite pull it off? Ramos is a revered manager and I think may take Tottenham further than they have ever been in the PL, but that said, can they just stop the "mystic meg" predictions every pre season, and get on with the job in hand. That way me and my partner may really have something to argue about....lol...

  9. the quality is certainly in the squad, but is the passion for wearing the tottenham shirt, i really hope for an exciting season, but i worry over the loss of robbie keane, now that is a player who wore the shirt with pride and passion, good luck robbie.
