Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso said he is glad his proposed transfer to Real Madrid will be settled one way or the other soon after reports emerged that talks over a deal are ongoing.
Officials of both clubs - Jose Angel Sanchez for Real and Christian Purslow for Liverpool - met on Sunday in Barcelona to discuss the move, according to Spanish sports newspapers AS and Marca.
AS said Real has offered 30 million euros (£25.5m) for the Spain international, an amount it said was about five million less than that sought by Liverpool.
Marca said Liverpool are seeking 40 million for the 27-year-old - 35 million plus five more based on results.
But it said if negotiations break down Real is ready to target Belgian Steven Defour of Standard Liege instead.
Xabi Alonso told AS: "It's reassuring to know that Madrid and Liverpool are talking seriously now.
"I decided a long time ago to stay on the margin of everything that was happening. My stance has been clear, as you all know. I'm a professional and I must wait for an agreement to be reached, but I hope it is resolved soon, for better or for worse."
Liverpool officials were in Barcelona for a friendly match against Espanyol on Sunday, which they lost 3-0.
Real have spent over 200 million euros on new players in the close season, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Kaka.
Marca said the Spanish giants have also reached a deal to offload Dutch midfielder Wesley Sneijder to Internazionale for 18 million euros.

copy this and post it again if you think that Liverpool is an idiot and Manchester United is the cooles and the champions for BPL 2010 is only for the red devils.. F**K YOU LIVERPOOL F**K ALL YOU SCOUSERS CAUSE MANCHESTER RULE!
let him go if he wants to go and buy ashley young
yeh let Xabi go to La Liga- if that's what he wants- but let's all stop going to that dump Riga where the interior minister calls us english pigs and the mayor says english tourists are his only problem- well, let's take our money elsewhere then !!!
how bout steven defour?
i hope alonso won't move to real and if so, i thought sneijder would be in liverpool
if lucas is promoted 2alonso place we wont finish in the top 4 and rafa will b sacked ..plan and simple..and im hearin that aquilani is supposed2 b comin..id prefer lucas than him and thats sayin something..seen aquilani play a lot and hes not a lfc player so lets hope its just rumours and not another bad signin by rafa..not sayin all his signings were bad but there has been a few bad 1s and aquilani would b a very bad 1
re 33 nice to see your apology even if it isnt for real but your title of scousehater just about sums up most united fans but i think what most people would like to know is why are you so obsesed with liverpool? and rooney included why do you hate scousers? my own opinion of it is you united fans say you hate scousers but you cant give a reason apart from the usual stereotypes scallys robbers etc when your own city of manchester has a much higher crime rate.john
Mmmm St. Gallen, Rapid Vienna, Espaniol, Notts County etc, etc, start beating those giants of world footy before spouting about winning the premiership eh!
Danny j what drug are you on Torres to leave LFC YOUR ANOTHER IDIOT go and soak you head or watch paint dry or something!!! PRATT
Plisken,
I've got an assignment for you. You have to get Alonso out of Liverpool in 24 hours. As insurance, there is a slow-dissolving capsule containing a lethal toxin that has been injected into your bloodstream. If Alonso is secured, you will get the antidote. If not, you will perish.
Btw the mission is called "Escape from Liverpool FC" and there will be a few more such missions for you to carry out under this top secret heading soon.
matt i go to the bernabeu 4 times a season because unfortunately i live in linwood either that or id be there every week, there in the last 10 years their has been 5 different champs so how are their only 2 tems in spain? the SPL is more exciting than premiership at least the old firm are there
Its very unlikely as villa himself ruled out a move to England but if Rafa could pull it off then good luck man utd......your gonna need it.....
If Alonso is determined to leave the mighty REDS! Then so be it....He's been a total professional throughout the talks behind closed doors. As a 100% Liverpool fan I wish him well, we have a strong midfield and won many games with him on the bench last season. I just hope that if the deal go through King Rafa makes a determined effort to bring home the 'Super Striker' David Villa to fire the second barrel alongside Nando. If Rafa is serious about bring the Prem Cup home and the regeneration of the glory days, that's the big name we need to strike fear into the rest of the division!
Liverpool FC 4 Eva!!!
madshit ate shih f.u son of @#$%
in madrid and barcelona there is only one good thing (the best spaniard and catalan b.i.t.c.h.e.s)
i alway come to spain to have fun with the b....
i think alonso want the same thing
i think alonso is being very correct in the way he is handling this "transfer" to real, and if he wants to go, whats the point of keeping him here?
we (liverpool) only want players who give 100%, and if he stayed against his wishes, would he give that?
how about p***ing @#$% vinegar off, by bringing viera here for a couple of seasons - i think he would still give us something in midfield, alongside masherano?
and give jay spearing a run in the first team, as well as some of the other fringe players.
xabi alonso is overated
I keep hoping this deal will fall through somehow, if it doesn't then Benitez has surely left it too late to find a replacement. Please don't tell me he's going to promote Lucas to the first team. He should have bought Gareth Barry when he had the chance
