Minnaar back on it in Bromont

Mon, 03 Aug 15:37:00 2009

Greg Minnaar stormed to his third Downhill World Cup win of 2009 in Bromont, Canada this weekend, in what has become one of the most closely fought series of all time. Putting his poor performance at Mont-Sainte-Anne behind him, Minnaar took advantage of the rapidly drying Mont Brome terrain to tear down the short, flat-out track.

Two-time World Champion, Fabien Barel of France finished in second, producing yet another outstanding performance, following a potentially career ending accident at the first round in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. The unstoppable Sam Hill of Australia took third place and retains the leaders jersey, following his win at the infamous Mont-Sainte-Anne track last week. Hill rolled home just 00.63 seconds off Minnaars winning time.

Great Britains Gee Atherton, current World Champion, once again failed to break into the top three, despite looking on form throughout the weekend. A hot favourite at the start of the season, Atherton is sitting in fourth place overall and in theory could take the title. With just one World Cup race left this season, fellow Brit Steve Peat is the more likely candidate for the win. Sitting just 69 points off the number one spot, the 35 year-old ex-plumber from Sheffield has rediscovered the form that propelled him to three World Cup titles in the last ten years.
