Milan's Serie A clash against Fiorentina was postponed until Monday due to their involvement in the UEFA Super Cup. The match was played as a tribute to Sevilla's Antonio Puerta, who died last week.

The Spanish side took the lead through Renato before Filippo Inzaghi levelled with a typical close-range header. Marek Jankulovski put Milan in front with a brilliant left-foot volley, before Kaka made the result safe, heading home after Andres Palop had parried his penalty.

Barcelona made light of recent upheavals to claim a decisive 3-1 victory against Athletic Bilbao. After a week of being linked heavily with Chelsea, Ronaldinho scored twice - one a penalty - while the injured Samuel Eto'o was hardly missed as Thierry Henry made a promising home debut.

Dynamo Kiev's Sengalese defender Pape Diakhate has suffered a broken shoulder and will be out of action for three months, keeping him out of the team's Champions League campaign.

"It is a great shame that we have lost Diakhate. He is a very experienced player and we had high hopes for him. He has a broken shoulder," Dynamo coach Anatoly Demyanenko said.

Diakhate, 23, was injured in Dynamo's weekend match against Kharkiv. He joined the club from Nancy during the off-season.
