Premier League - Paper Round: Babel wants out

Eurosport - Thu, 03 Sep 14:14:00 2009

A round-up of the day's newspaper talk with Liverpool winger Ryan Babel keen on leaving for Ajax in January to get first-team football ahead of the World Cup.

2009 Liverpool Ryan Babel - 0

Dutchman Babel is reportedly angry at Reds boss Rafael Benitez's refusal to give him more playing time and wants a solution that allows him to shine ahead of the finals in South Africa, for which the Netherlands have already qualified (several newspapers, including the Daily Telegraph and Mirror).

The 22-year-old was signed from the Dutch club for £11.5 million in 2007 but has been little more than a bit-part player and has only started one game this season.

"There have been things promised, but they have not been followed up," he said. "I was told I would get to play more minutes and have more chances, but after the first defeat I lost my place.

"I think half a season at Ajax with a view to the World Cup wouldn't be a bad idea. Now we have agreed to review the situation in January."

Mark Viduka could join West Ham outside the transfer window as, after leaving Newcastle, he is without a club and could therefore join any time outside the transfer window (Daily Express). The big Aussie striker, 33, rejected a deal to join Portsmouth and also failed to agree terms with Fulham.

The Telegraph also revealed that the Hammers failed to sign Benjani on transfer deadline day because, bizarrely and much to their shock, he would rather re-join former Manchester City boss Sven-Goran Eriksson at Notts County. The East London club are now expected to agree a pre-contract with Marouane Chamakh in January.

Daniel Cousin could still leave Hull despite the breakdown of a loan move to Burnley after the clubs could not agree a wage-share deal. He may now drop down a division due to the Championship's different transfer regulations, with Cardiff primed to loan him.

Arsenal striker Niklas Bendtner could have joined one of "the biggest clubs in the world" but signed a new contract at Arsenal, according to his dad/agent Thomas. The Dane penned a £50,000 a week deal after impressing Arsene Wenger with his "application and determination over the last season". The Daily Mirror extrapolated it to say he snubbed Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Internazionale but there is little evidence of that.

  1. Comment 172 - "they constantly claim all sorts of shyte which the rest of the country are pist off at they are very average and getting worse not better ! does that answer your question marc ?"

That's enough about your failings but what about Liverpool?

Also, is that fat, jug-eared, "once a blue always a blue", sweaty meff of a striker you lot have ever going to realise how stupid he looks, as he gazes at a fixed point in space apparently oblivious to the onrushing defender (an odd lack of awareness for an international striker) before slumping to the turf in a blatant dive?

That interview he gave the other week about players diving was one of the most cringe-inducing things I've ever heard, especially coming from a man who's side regularly benefited from the weekly antics of Christina Ronaldo, still the only woman ever to play in the Premier League.

If it wasn't for the fact that Berbatov is a £30m waste of space, I'm not sure that fat lad would have got a game for United last season. What does he do these days exactly, other than fall over and shout at people?

  2. Comment 152: No, it isn't Manchester. Really. Are you by any chance a Cockney Red? Anyway, here's a quick geography lesson for you - I don't pretend I can compensate for your failure to avail yourself of eleven years of state-provided education, but at least I can give you a few pointers.

Greater Manchester is a county which includes two cities (Manchester and Salford) and ten boroughs stretching from Stockport to Oldham, each of which is a major metropolitan area in their own right.

One of those Boroughs is Trafford, which is an entirely separate entity to Manchester - it shares a broder with Manchester and also Salford but is not a part of either city. Trafford itself contains several towns, one of which is Stretford. Old Trafford is in Stretford. Not Manchester.

Suggesting that Old Trafford is in Manchester because it's in Greater Manchester is no different from suggesting the JJB Stadium is in Manchester, since Wigan is also in Greater Manchester.

Interestingly, Manchester United originated in Newton Heath which *is* in Manchester, then moved to Clayton which is also in Manchester, before finally getting the message and leaving the city.

More fun Manchester United facts, all of which are true:

Manchester United won their first league title after buying star players from Manchester City. The players were banned for life from playing for City after receiving wages from the club; even then Manchester United were keen on poaching other team's players and snapped up half a team's worth, winning the title the following season.

Manchester United's first game at Old Trafford was against Liverpool, who won 4-3. Four goals conceded at home against Liverpool! That would never happen under Ferguson, eh..?

The river Mersey runs through Trafford.

  4. Yes, in my opinion Rafa Benitez's job should be under serious threat. The right man for the job is Luciano Spalletti and i honestly think that with him, liverpool fans such as me can not only start dreaming about the days when we once again start lifting the epl trophy but realistically actually living them with the managerial expertise and qualities Spalletti possesses.

Over the past 5 to 8 years i have started to follow the Seria A matches more often especially when Udinese and Roma were concerned while under the guidance of the master himself Signor Spalletti. What i can say is that i fell in love with his style of play and his philosophy of football and his game approach. Furthermore Spalletti is one of the greatest tactical minds the world of football has seen in the past decade, and like Benitez also uses the 4-2-3-1 formation however unlike Benitez, Spalletti uses it to good effect. Also his managerial skills were also extremely evident whilst at Udinese, a generally unexceptional side in Italy with limited resources, however even in such a difficult situation as the one he was faced with, Spalletti in his own special way managed to lead Udinese to unbelievable success. In fact it was for this reason that he was then appointed as Roma's manager where he also was successful.

Luciano Spalletti is Italian and 50 years of age however has the attitude of 30 year old, whose sides have always played very free flowing football and appealing to the general public especially all those passionate Roma fans who always stood by him and adored him and wished him to stay for many more years to come but unfortunately for them it wasn't to be. Also due to his departure he is currently without a club.

For this reason i believe the solution to Liverpool's worrying problems is obvious:
Time to make way with Benitez and bring back the good old glory days with the introduction of Mr.Spalletti. I am not his only admirer by the way. MANY adore him. Spallett
