Premier League - Benitez: Agger not for sale

Eurosport - Fri, 03 Oct 15:30:00 2008

Liverpool insist Daniel Agger is not for sale after Real Madrid declared an interest in the defender.

FOOTBALL 2007-2008 Premier League Liverpool Dan Agger - 0

Real's vice-president Jose Angel Sanchez has said the Danish international is top of the club's transfer target list.

Liverpool signed Agger for £5.8 million in the summer of 2006 from Danish side Brondby.

He quickly became a first-team regular and made 47 appearances in his first season at the club but has since fallen out of favour with Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez.

Agger played only seven times last season and has featured just twice this term, leading to speculation that he could leave the club.

Benitez, however, has said that Real would be wasting their time in making a bid for the Dane.

"The situation is very simple, Daniel Agger is our player and he is not for sale," said Benitez on a statement issued on Liverpool's official website.

"His future is at Anfield and nowhere else. He knows my ideas because we have talked with him and he has a long future with us.

"We do not want to lose our concentration just before we play Manchester City by talking about other things but it is important that people know that Agger is not for sale."

Agger, who has two years left on his contract, reiterated his desire to stay at the club in a recent interview on Danish TV, but that has not stopped the Real vice president from declaring his interest in the player.

Sanchez told the Times: "We already had plans about buying Agger this summer, along with some other players, but the Robinho situation took so much attention and demanded so many resources from the club that we had to drop the plans about putting a bid in for Agger and other players that we had in mind.

"What we need is a defender and a striker, and, at the moment, Agger is on top of our list."

  1. Why is it the Real have to try and unsettle the players at big clubs. Agger is world class the perfect partner for Carra, but Skrtel has been on really good form, its got to be hard for Daniel to be sat on the bench but his time will come again this season. Its a good thing for Liverpool to have such a selection headache we've got 4 fantastic central defenders. The squad looks stronger this season fingers crossed we can stay in this form all season.

  5. Dear Kerry C, and similar, we understand your frustrations regarding the recalcitrant lack of class, history, and glory that your team suffers, and therefore, welcome you to join us in our LFC spaces, where all of the above are in abundance.

  13. nicholasbnjmn.. LFC are not a better team than Real Madrid. Furthermore, if anyone thinks LFC are going to win the league this year, word of advice, take your head out of the sand.

  14. Skrtel's in excellent form, strong in the tackle, comfortable on the ball - he'll be at Anfield for many years. Carragher, on the other hand, is becoming something of a liability - too many free kicks given away in silly places. Next time there's a televised Liverpool match, watch his hands at corners and set pieces - he can't mark a man without wrapping his arms around the opponent. He's holding shirts, shorts, anything he can grab hold of - he's not the player he was a couple of years ago, that's for sure.

  16. Daniel agger is top class and real's interest should be a boost to his confidence as he knows LFC are a better team. I agree with othe comments that carra is not the future although he will always have a place in our hearts. The question is with skrtel playing so well will benitez have the bravery to seperate sentiment from logic. Only time will tell on that one. Benitez is the king!!!!

From nicholasbnjmn, on Fri 3 Oct 3:01PM
  17. i agree, on current form, skrtel cannot be dropped, he's as good as any at the moment. but in the long term skrtel and agger are our central defensive duo, as much as i hate saying it, carra cant go on 4ever, and he's at the wrong end of his career, although he has another good few years ahead, and i cant see sami going on beyond his current contract, not wit us anyway, agger and skrtel will be with us for a long time, and i cant see a better center back partnership than dat, the 2 of them are class, dats why Madrid are trying to tap up agger.

  18. Well my dear Kerry, your grasp of the English language and vocubulary is exemplary.
You muct have a masters in it,and probably in your spare time teach English as a second language.

Oh,do you know any little bit about football.
Its a big round thing, full of air (remind you of anyone Kerry)
There`s 11 players on each team.
There is a man in the middle called a REFEREE.
There are two men doing the line called ASSISTANT REFEREE`S.
They used to be called LINESMEN.
Thats the very very basics Kerry.
