Premier League - Moyes vows to stick with Everton

Eurosport - Fri, 03 Oct 16:07:00 2008

Everton boss David Moyes has no intention of walking out on the club following a wretched start to the season.

FOOTBALL: Everton manager David Moyes - 0

Moyes has recently been linked with Newcastle and Tottenham, two clubs who are currently enduring a rougher ride than that of the Toffees.

The fact he has yet to sign a lucrative new contract has further stirred the gossipmongers who now have more to mull over in the wake of Everton's exit last night from the UEFA Cup at the first hurdle.

Coming just eight days after being dumped out of the Carling Cup by Blackburn, and on the back of three successive defeats at Goodison Park in the Barclays Premier League, these are tough times for Moyes.

But this is far from new territory for the feisty Scot who is eager to turn the tide currently flowing against his side.

A defiant Moyes said: "Who says when you come into football management that every year you're going to have a good year?

"We have had tough tests - all managers face difficult times, and I have had some.

"No one has a divine right to win football games. You have to earn the right to do so.

"Managers can get into situations where it can be hard, and I have had it before. That's your job.

"There's no manager in football who thinks they have an easy ride, that's for sure. That's part of it. But I want to stay."

But as to if and when he signs his contract, his response was a little cryptic, adding: "There might be as timescale, something might happen."

And then when asked to assure supporters he would stay at Everton, Moyes replied: "The supporters have known that for a long time."

The problem for Moyes is the supporters' patience may start to wear thin unless results and performances improve.

There was little to cheer at the Stade Maurice Dufrasne as Belgian champions Standard played a patient game early on before catching Everton on the break.

Axel Witsel gave Liege a 22nd-minute lead before Phil Jagielka took advantage of goalkeeper Aragon Espinoza's blunder in the 67th minute to give Everton hope.

But 11 minutes later Leighton Baines bundled over Milan Jovanovic in the area, and the Serbian delivered the final blow from the spot.

Moyes, though, felt Liege captain Steven Defour should not have been on the pitch prior to his contribution for the opener after vehemently confronting referee Peter Sippel.

Defour was furious at a decision that had gone against his side, and just stopped himself short of shoving Sippel.

Instead, the German only issued a yellow, and then shortly after failed to spot a foul on Ayegbeni Yakubu that could also have warranted a caution.

"You can't run up to a referee and do that in his face nowadays. We all know that," said Moyes.

"In England you're not allowed to do what he did. Maybe in Europe it's different, but I thought they were stricter.

"I thought he should have been sent off for his reaction, and then for him not to be sent off for the professional foul on Yakubu was unbelievable.

"If he (Defour) had been sent off it would have made a difference because he had the shot that led to their first goal.

"We were playing well against 11, so against 10 we would have had more space."

  1. chronic*high... Thanks. After reading some of these posts, I'm starting to wonder just who're supposed to be the 'bitter' supporters ;) I mean this in the nicest possible way, but I'm not interested in Liverpool apart from when we play you. I've found a lot of Reds have become slightly more interested in us only since Moyes took over the helm and stabilised the club. We beat you into 4th (did nothing with it like !!) and we've pushed you for the same spot (with a MUCH smaller squad) since. When you consider the teams both our managers' inherited and the money they've spent, Moyes isn't doing too bad in my opinion, and I'd love to see some of these so called 'big name' no-marks trying to do the same.

  3. I find it absolutely incredulous that so many Liverpool fans spend time on the Everton site. I can understand that you want to goad the Evertonians. But surely you have friends you can do this with?! Although, ‘albionpallets2003’ a.k.a bily (as you signed off on an earlier comment…should that be Billy-Bob?) it’s probably a lonely existence for you in those Welsh mountains, with just a sheep and Cletus, your brother, who happens to also be your father, for company. I’ve never wasted my time on Liverpool websites however; I do enjoy the banter with my Liverpool supporting friends and unfortunately the odd family member. I suggest you get out of your cow shed and try to find some friends that don’t have four legs or exists in Cyber Space! Oh,and before I leave, I just have to say that I don’t need the train time table for Kirby as I don’t go there and I have my own transport. However, you may have been referring to the possible relocation of Everton Football Club to Kirby? Everton need to move and you never know maybe another club will be formed from our departure. I believe this happened once before, back in 1892. Without Everton FC, Liverpool FC would not exist. You owe your existence to Everton....you should get down on your knees and thank Everton Football Club! Good bye murdering red scum
P.S to the person that left the comment before this, you spoke some sense. However, we're not all from the same City...you're all from f**king Wales or Scandinavia!

  10. Lived in Liverpool all my life and believe me blue is not the colour red is. Surely the city of culture people can see that.Majority rule, Liverpool should be a one football team city and that could only be red. The rest are just an embarrassment for the city.

  12. I just hope that Moyes does not give up out of frustration with the lack of finance and the abject failure of his team to compete this season. There appears to be something seriously wrong with the attitude of all the players for they are failing to play as a team and are consistently poor in all areas of play. I am concerned that the coaches may have lost self motivation and basically everyone needs a good kick up the arse. The new players have not clicked and it must concern us that Saha who has shown ability and will to win was injured last night. What is of greatest concern is the fact that our established players are playing nothing like they did last season - why?
The game against Newcastle is a pivotal point in our season for are oponents are under pressure and should they win at Goodison a vicious circle will prevail and Everton could be in freefall.

By the way, when you red scum have finished picking peanuts out of your dads a**e, why don’t come to the City of Liverpool as we are celebrating the Capital of Culture year. I imagine the train service from Wales is reliable and I’m sure the social services can arrange a carer to get you here!

  18. Ho hum. Could Everton's @#$% start to the season have anything to do with their inability to sign anyone worth mentioning. Saha? Whoop-de-doo. I'm a Red, but my best mate's a Toffee season ticket holder, and they had a protest at the first match of the season where they all took their footie boots along and waved them at the directors' box whilst shouting "Put ME on! I can play! I've brought me boots and everything!" Not quite as full on as the Geordie fools, but you would think the board might have got the message. I think Moyse is a bloody good manager personally, who works miracles season in season out with next to money, but you can't sustain that indefinitely. Hope they stay up so the Reds can stuff em twice a season for my amusement!!

From JayR, on Fri 3 Oct 9:41AM

  20. Mousy spends each season bemoaning referees decisions. As a tactician he has no idea. Tactics all wrong last night but in truth you cant give two goals away at home and hope to progress in Europe.
