Bristol City goalkeeper Dean Gerken dented Newcastle's promotion charge with a defiant display in a 0-0 draw at St James' Park.
Gerken, only in the side after Adriano Basso injured himself during the warm-up, produced fine second-half saves to deny Danny Guthrie and Kevin Nolan inside a minute as the Magpies had to make do with a point at home for the second time in four days.
Marlon Harewood had earlier hit the post and Steven Taylor and Kevin Nolan both headed against the crossbar, but the Coca-Cola Championship leaders were simply unable to break down their opponents on a frustrating afternoon.
City rarely threatened, although Cole Skuse saw a blistering half-volley deflected narrowly over the bar in the 15th minute.
Despite the setback, the Magpies remain three points clear at the top after second-placed West Brom were held to a goalless draw by Preston earlier in the day.

i thought it was agood away point for Bristol City, onus is on home team to break us down.. which newcastle didnt...... would be nice if media gave some recognition of that fact.....4 points off the teams that came down from premiership.... bring on the baggies i say
alas did not the woodwork save them not once but three times!!!
on another day theywould/should have gone in!!!
Jack,
when it's not your day, it's not your day!
I am more concerned at how we have dropped 4 points at home; we need to be more ruthless in front of goal - it's okay keeping clean sheets, but we need to start scoring. We need creativity in midfield and width.
What another fantastic turnout by the way - 44k . . . . . truly astonishing!!!!
got a lot of time for bristol city , but my respect has dwindled a bit . teams that have no bottle and arrive hopeing to get a draw deserve nowt ! and what is it with these away fans this season ! come to SJP and they think theyve arrived at the san siro for the european cup final ! ha ha , makes for a good atmosphere though . ps , can someone guide the ref out of the ground the blind bas*$rd !
There are no easy games in the championship, belive me as an SAFC supporter . . I know this !!!
Let's not forget the certain pen turned down in the 2nd half when Harewood was taken down. Martyn A. How did you take the game to us? You came for a point and were lucky to get one and celebrated like it was result of the season at the end.
martin a how do you think you deserved to win?we were @#$% and were still only stopped from winning by a dodgy ref and two cracking saves from your keeper,i dont remember you creating anything to worry steve harper cant remember him having to make a noteable save!!
Thats 4 points thrown away, hope it doesnt come back to haunt them at the end of the season as it did last year when we dropped so many points at home !
You obviously weren't there!
A very onesided view of the match, City took the game to them and deserved to win.
