Gerken thwarts toothless Magpies

Sat, 03 Oct 18:57:04 2009

Bristol City goalkeeper Dean Gerken dented Newcastle's promotion charge with a defiant display in a 0-0 draw at St James' Park.

Gerken, only in the side after Adriano Basso injured himself during the warm-up, produced fine second-half saves to deny Danny Guthrie and Kevin Nolan inside a minute as the Magpies had to make do with a point at home for the second time in four days.

Marlon Harewood had earlier hit the post and Steven Taylor and Kevin Nolan both headed against the crossbar, but the Coca-Cola Championship leaders were simply unable to break down their opponents on a frustrating afternoon.

City rarely threatened, although Cole Skuse saw a blistering half-volley deflected narrowly over the bar in the 15th minute.

Despite the setback, the Magpies remain three points clear at the top after second-placed West Brom were held to a goalless draw by Preston earlier in the day.

  3. Jack,
when it's not your day, it's not your day!
I am more concerned at how we have dropped 4 points at home; we need to be more ruthless in front of goal - it's okay keeping clean sheets, but we need to start scoring. We need creativity in midfield and width.
    What another fantastic turnout by the way - 44k . . . . . truly astonishing!!!!
