United rescue late point

Sat, 03 Oct 22:41:46 2009

Manchester United delved into their much-used box of late comebacks to rescue a 2-2 draw against Sunderland.

Two weeks after Michael Owen's last-gasp winner against Manchester City, Anton Ferdinand could not get out of the way of an off-target effort from Patrice Evra to grab United a point and deprive the Black Cats of their first Old Trafford win since 1968.

Sunderland had led twice through goals from Darren Bent and Kenwyne Jones either side of Dimitar Berbatov's strike early in the second half.

Bent opened the scoring in front of watching England coach Fabio Capello and what a strike his seventh of the season was in the seventh minute.

He got far enough away from John O'Shea during a lengthy Black Cats build-up to have room to turn away from the Irishman when Lee Cattermole played the final pass and the finish was inch perfect, giving Ben Foster no chance.

United levelled when O'Shea's curling 51st-minute cross was perfectly met by Berbatov's overhead kick, which nestled in the bottom corner.

As they say when the TV picture goes down, normal service was expected to resume shortly. Instead, United conceded again.

Foster, and no doubt Sir Alex Ferguson, who had already been incensed by a couple of Alan Wiley's decisions, will doubtless feel Jones fouled the United keeper as he rose to meet Andy Reid's cross just before the hour mark, but Foster should have been stronger in the challenge. Instead, he was shoved aside to allow Jones to head into an empty net.

Probably only this knowledge kept the hosts going as, even after Kieran Richardson's needless dismissal, it never actually looked like happening.

Evra refused to accept second best, though, leaving Ferdinand to beat the ground in frustration.

  1. i think the view that man united needs a keeper is right.foster lacks good prejudgement which is expected of any good keeper.he is most of the times flat on his feet.he is always caught wanting, his positioning, even back passing by defenders,he sumtimes sleep during the match(lose concertration)-busy counting stars in the sky on a broad daylight.i personally think both reserve keepers are not man untd quality.honestly that area needs visiting if united is to mount a serious challenge against chelsea.i foresee many goals raining against deadly strikers who can pounce on even half chances.

  2. clearly this is a match we would 've won by 3 nil save for fergie's arrogance if he had used the same boyz who played against wolfsburg we would have sealed victory in the 30th min but he was trying to prove to steve bruce that with his 3rd 11 he could trash sunderland.........i dont understand y fergie keeps embarrasing foster kuszak is better no matter ow many times foster is in goal....sometimes i tyhink fergie buys players to embarass them what would one say bout player like nani, valencia, welbeck n berbie;bunch of below average plyers.......

Once again your cynical tone is amazing, If you ever bother to read my posts correctly and remember what I posted, earlier postings said " I would be over the moon to come away from Old Trafford with a point".
My last post you replied to, was simply stating that we could have come away with all three points if certain individuals had remained focussed and done their jobs corrrectly.
These points also apply to your team it would seem as the last two results they have managed to scrape through show that lack of concentration seems to bridge all divisions of the league whether it be EPL or Championship!!!!!!

  4. MALCOLM D, I agree, absolutely shocking to come away from Man Utd with only 1 point to show for it.

  6. man utd never give up they are the best team ever !!! There are so many united haters out there or people that just dont understand that the games not over until the referee blows for time. Yesterday he added on 2 seconds extra to the 4 minutes despite the mighty reds scoring in that 4 minutes. United are the best football team in england thats why they have been champions for the last 3 seasons.
so get used to it you bunch of jealous wan**rs.

  7. Good team result with the exception of Richardson's petulance. he must learn and grow from these experiences. Hope it teaches him a lesson. Defnence still needs tweaking to get the finesse and concentration levels to an accepatable standard.

  10. Tch tch tch! SAF SAF SAF! What were you thinking last night. Points lost like last night could cumulatively cost ManUnited the championship. Sunderland are 8th on the table and you fielded an experimental team. No wonder Rooney and Berbatov were screaming mad. There was simply no service to them. All the attacks went limp in midfield. What did you give them for dinner? They were even colour-blind - passing the ball to the opposition. It was a night best quickly forgotten and never ever to be re-enacted. Sell Foster and Nani. Get another keeper. And tell the players they are supposed to pass to their team-mates and make sure they know who they are. Then and only then do we have some hope.

  12. Comment #10, I assume you do not watch United games. Berbatov is absolutely brilliant. He may not have the same eamaount of energy as Rooney but I think he contibutes as much as anyone else in United squad. When our first goalkeeper return, I will see and say something. The team is as good as when your players were there. You can not win every game and Chlsea lost to wigan which has been beaten by Hull.

  14. Richardson let Sunderland down bad. what a stupid yellow to get. already on a yellow, but the ref sent him off to appease the Man u fans. you are nothing since Ronaldo and Tevez left.

  15. Man u get help all the time from the officials. everyone knows it. well done Sunderland, you deserved to win, but yet again the ref wouldn't allow it. still only getting 1 point is great for CFC. hope we beat the scousers.

  16. well i suppose the gangster bookies would not have done too well with a sunderland win, just shows how easy it is to manipulate a manscum united result again, well done Sir Alex and Rupert Murdoch

  20. Hard to REALLY blame Ferdinand...Cripes, the last 10 minutes was a panic in Sunderland's box the whole time...Personally, I blame Richardson for the loss of two points - sit him next game!
