Glock denies gifting Hamilton title

Eurosport - Mon, 03 Nov 23:51:00 2008

Timo Glock said Lewis Hamilton won the World Championship by his own skills shown throughout the season and not because of the German's tyre choice for the final laps of the Brazilian Grand Prix.

FORMULA 1 Toyota Glock - 0

Glock opted to stay on dry-weather tyres as light rain fell in the closing stages of the race and though he did not lose too much time initially, the final lap proved crucial as Hamilton passed him in the last few hundred metres to give the Briton the fifth place he needed to win the title.

"It was a hard race. I tried my best to get some points for Toyota," Glock told BBC Radio Five Live.

"Six laps from the end I asked about the tyre situation and about the weather conditions and I said every time 'I'll stay out, one more lap, one more lap' and at the end I stayed out for the whole race.

"That last lap just cost us the chance to be in the top five, and in the end decided the World Championship," added Glock, who finished sixth, behind race winner Felipe Massa, the Brazilian who would have taken the title had Glock held on to fifth place.

"I think at the end I didn't give the title to Lewis, I think they worked for that the whole year, and Felipe as well," he said.

"They both did a really great job all year and in the end it was a dramatic finale.

"I think it's exactly what the fans want to see - maybe the Brazilian fans are not on my side any more but I tried my best and drove my race, and in the end I can't change it."

  1. If Italian media can act with great sportsman like behaviour, why can't the anti-Lewis brigade follow their example?

The anti-Lewis brigade only show how narrow minded and blinkered they are when they can't accept Lewis winning the drivers title fairly.

If the positions of Lewis and Felipe had been reversed (Felipe needing 5th to win the drivers title) and what happened in the last two corners happened, would the anti-Lewis brigade be commenting that Felipe shouldn't have been drivers champion ?

Somehow I think they would've kept quiet.

  2. I see here that a lot of people from both sides of the fence (LH or FM), maybe more on the Masa side, which is understandable, are asking themselves what happened to Timo. I am a big fan of F1 in particular and I like learning more about the true mechanics of the sport. Before I try to explain what happened to Timo, I would like to say, that I am not a Lewis fan - my favourite drivers are Alonso & Vetel and my current favourite team is Renault. However I am the type who likes to look realistically at F1.

Summarizing shortly - 1)Timo has absolutely no fault for letting Lewis pass. 2)It was INEVITABLE that he loses his position to both Vetel and Lewis. 3)Not Timo secured the 5th position for Lewis BUT Lewis was instrumental in Timo holding to his 6th! 4)The McLaren team demonstrated unprofessional behaviour by letting the feelings take them completely and even transferring this pressure to LH by panic striken, obsolete orders from the box. 5) The same happened to the Ferarri team. 6) The ones who comment do not have quick access to enough information. 7) The combination of 4),5) and 6) created a DRAMA THAT NEVER EXISTED! Story follows...

McLaren don't get any rulings in their favour because of the stealing/spying from last season. The FIA aren't on Ferrari's payroll, in fact Ferrari are the only team to protest the FIA "spec engine" idea. At Spa Hami didn't follow the rules by waiting past the next corner, if he had waited he would have had an easy win as he was much faster than the Ferrari's.

McLaren lost the constructors title by quite a bit and Hami only beat Massa by one point, so explain to me the part about blowing Ferrari out of the water, have they stolen another of Ferrari's technical reports?

  16. The only team that NEEDS to cheat in F1 is Ferrari, Lewis did a fantastic job and the world knows he did...
Ferrari are the team that make their drivers let the other one through, they did it last year in Brazil and this year in China, it's just a shame that it was too little TOO late for the cheaters, the better man on the day and NO ONE can take that away from him...
