Serie A - Round-up: Milan go top with late win

Milan moved to the top of the Serie A table after a dramatic 1-0 victory over 10-man Napoli at the San Siro.

FOOTBALL 2008/09 Milan-Napoli Kakà Blasi - 0

The visitors had Cristian Maggio sent-off for a second bookable offence just before half-time but Milan missed a host of chances to take the lead.

The best of those came just five minutes from time when Gennaro Iezzo produced a fantastic save to deny Kaka from the penalty spot.

However, moments later the breakthrough was found as German Denis headed a Ronaldinho free-kick into his own net.

The result was harsh on a brave Napoli side who would have also gone top if they had won the game.

They were equal to Milan throughout the first-half when it was 11-a-side, and then, led by the magnificent Paolo Cannavaro, defended admirably in the second-half.

Milan did miss some good chances though, with Kaka cracking one drive off the post, and substitute Alexandre Pato inexplicably putting a header from inside the six-yard area wide.

However, it looked like Milan would nick the win in contentious circumstances when a penalty was awarded after Kaka's cross crashed off the arm of Michele Pazienza but it was hard to see how the Napoli substitute could have avoided making contact.

Kaka missed the spot kick but then Denis headed into his own net to hand the victory to Carlo Ancelotti's men.

Atalanta Bergamo 0-0 Lecce

A poor game which the hosts just about edged despite having Jaime Valdes dismissed in the second half for a nasty tackle.

Cagliari 5-1 Bologna

Forwards Robert Acquafresca and Jeda scored twice as the Sardinians came from behind to move further from the danger zone.

Frontman Marco Di Vaio struck from just outside the area to give struggling Bologna the lead but Acquafresca deservedly levelled with a header just before the interval.

Daniele Conti nodded in just after the break and another powerful header from Acquafresca sealed victory before Jeda added the gloss.

Lazio 1-0 Catania

The home side's persistence was rewarded when midfielder Pasquale Foggia netted from close range five minutes from time.

Lazio move up to fifth while the Sicilians have now not won in three.

Palermo 3-0 Chievo Verona

Striker Fabrizio Miccoli put the home side ahead after they were awarded a soft penalty for pushing in the box midway through the first half.

Chievo's Sergio Pellissier struck the post moments later but Danish defender Simon Kjaer, who won the penalty, doubled the lead when he cleverly steered home. Edinson Cavani made it three with a composed finish in first-half stoppage time.

Palermo midfielder Marco Bresciano was dismissed for two yellows early in the second period.

Sampdoria 1-0 Torino

Home forward Claudio Bellucci snatched the points with a cheeky backheel on 85 minutes while Torino were left fuming at having a goal ruled out.

Striker Nicola Amoruso hit the post with a header in the second half and was then bizarrely flagged offside when a clearance rebounded off him into the goal.

Siena 1-0 Fiorentina

Houssine Kharja's header from a corner gave mid-table Siena the spoils in the Tuscan derby.

Fiorentina's Adrian Mutu had a goal chalked off for offside and Gianluca Curci produced a smart save from Mutu's strike partner Giampaolo Pazzini but Siena also had other chances with Mario Frick hitting the post.

Udinese 2-2 Genoa

Fabio Quagliarella grabbed a point for the joint leaders after a superb strike from 20 metres by Giuseppe Sculli had looked set to give the away side a comeback victory.

Gaetano D'Agostino put the hosts ahead from the spot on four minutes after striker Antonio Floro Flores was pulled down by defender Domenico Criscito.

Genoa then piled on the pressure and were eventually rewarded when Diego Milito equalised with a penalty after Aleksandar Lukovic fouled Anthony Vanden Borre.
