Hoffenheim have been dealt a crushing blow with the news Andreas Ibertsberger suffered a serious facial injury at the weekend.

The Austrian defender went up for an aerial challenge during the 1-0 win over Freiburg and was left in a severe pain.

Tests have revealed the 27-year-old defender has broken his cheekbone, eye socket and maxillary sinus.

Ibertsberger underwent surgery on Monday and he has been told he will not play again this year.

"We will be monitoring his progress very closely over the next few days and weeks," Dr. Pieter Beks told Hoffenheim's official website.

"At the moment, it would be right to assume that 'Andi' will not be available until after the winter break."
