Ecclestone pushing for 20-race season

Bernie Ecclestone has reiterated his desire to see the Formula One championship calendar expand to 20 races a season.
Ecclestone has long been pushing to increase the number of races a year and next season there is provisionally 19 on the bill - two more than in 2009, with South Korea and Canada joining the fold.
However, while more races would appeal to Ecclestone, it remains to be seen how the teams will feel, especially given the current economic climate - although a proposal to allow testing after a grand prix could be one way to appease them and help make it a bit more financially viable.
"I always said that it is possible and obviously now there are more and more people falling for that idea," he said.
"Nobody needs testing. It was always, in my opinion, that testing costs money while racing brings money. Or let them test on Monday after the race when everybody is at the track, the hotels are paid for and that huge logistical effort is eliminated."
The number of F1 events has increased in recent years to accommodate new countries, and that has seen the calendar gradually creep up from 16 races per season, which was the norm in the 1990s.
Only last weekend Abu Dhabi hosted its inaugural F1 event and Ecclestone was impressed with the 5.554 kilometre track, which was designed by renowned F1 architect Hermann Tilke.
"I am overwhelmed and I think everybody felt the same when they saw this. It is monumental," he continued.
"When I came here in April a lot was not finished but I definitely knew that there would be race in the autumn, although it was hard to believe it at that time.
"Look what they've done. It is almost a miracle come true thinking about where we started."

To bring it to 20 or 21 races, Bernie should look at these races:
1) BRING FORMULA ONE BACK TO THE UNITED STATES!!!

Toyota Motor has decided to follow Honda and BMW out of Formula One racing to save costs as the Japanese carmaker braces for its second straight annual loss, a person with knowledge of the situation said on Wednesday.
Akio Toyoda, the Japanese automaker's president, is expected to announce the move later on Wednesday.
Toyota's decision deals a fresh blow to F1, which has been battered by scandals, management disputes and an exodus of sponsors and car manufacturers amid the global economic downturn.
It adds to the challenges facing Jean Todt, the former Ferrari team boss who won a bitterly contested election for president of the Federation International d'Automobile, the motorsport's governing body, last month.
On Monday Bridgestone, F1's exclusive tyre supplier, said it would abandon the sport after its contract expires at the end of the 2010 season.
F1 teams spend hundreds of millions of dollars a year to stay competitive on the technology-intensive circuit. Toyota has few trophies to show for its investments, however, and speculation that it would quit had been growing since Honda announced its exit last December.
Toyota, which is the world's largest car manufacturer, suffered a Y766bn ($8.5bn) net loss last year and expects to lose money again in the current year to March 2010.
Other motorsports have also suffered during the downturn, with Subaru, Mitsubishi and Suzuki leaving the world rally championship and Kawasaki withdrawing its MotoGP team.

HT, I fully agree with you, a twenty five or a thirty race F1 season would be great and their are no excuses not to have a thirty race F1 series, more countries would be involved. A race every weekend is certainly manageable within Europe, but fly aways to Asian countries, Australia, and Middle Eastern countries will need to be fortnightly apart, races in North America F1 teams could have their transporters and motorhomes shipped across the North Atlantic, this will only take about six days to cross the North Atlantic, with the North American leg of the series would need to be one hit with four F1 races within a month something that can be accomplished, while Brazil would need to be another fly away race. But the F1 calander would need to start in March and finish late November. But I would rather twenty races in a F1 championship season than seventeen races a season, expanding the F1 season is a fantastic idea. But the question is will others on this site agree.
I would love for there to be more races... let's just say I'd rather have more races run at a lower budget for each than fewer races costing more each. It's not the money that adds to the spectacle, after all...
It would be great to have a 8-9 month F1 season that had race weekends every week, and a break of a fortnight only when they're switching continents...frankly, I don't think a calendar of 25-30 races is too unreasonable, if Bernie was able to take in less money in each event, but receive more money overall (the teams as well), and teams had limited budgets, I don't see why this is unachievable.
Plus, less money for teams to set up their cars will force them to make decisions on where to spend money on, which could lead to more interesting races over all, and more unpredictable results, without sacrificing the technical freedom that sets F1 apart from other series (the main reason I watch F1 rather than Indycar)
A twenty race F1 Championship, this is the right step by Bernie here. The F1 season needs to expand, to add a F1 races in the United States, retain the British GP, the return of the French GP. But if the Championship became a twenty two race Championship, the United States could have a second race, and the return of San Marino F1 race. But I would think that Bernie might try and bring in another F1 race in the Mid East, than have a race San Marino GP again, and this move would not be that popular.

How much money is enough Bernie? Why don't you quit expanding in the third world and return F1 to the foundation on which it was built? The UK, France and the US all respectively deserve a grand prix. They made you what you are, so why do you turn your back on them? Your just a greedy exiled elf from the North Pole!
