Top seed Andy Murray celebrated his return from injury with a comfortable 6-3 6-1 win over wild card Daniel Gimeno-Traver in the first round of ATP Valencia.
The British world number four, who has been sidelined since the US Open in September with a wrist problem, converted five of his 10 break points against the Spaniard, who is ranked 77, and lost his own serve just once.
Among the players still in with a chance of a place at the season-ending World Tour Finals in London later this month, fifth seed Gilles Simon of France had an easy 6-3 6-2 win over Russia's Igor Kunitsyn.
Simon's compatriot Gael Monfils, the number six seed, defeated Spanish wild card Marcel Granollers 6-4 6-2, while seventh seed Tommy Robredo recovered from a second-set lapse to beat Belgium's Christophe Rochus 6-0 5-7 6-3 .
In other matches, Spain's former world number one Juan Carlos Ferrero squandered a one-set lead in losing 2-6 7-6 6-3 to Uruguay's Pablo Cuevas.
Spanish eighth seed David Ferrer beat compatriot Nicolas Almagro 7-5 6-7 6-2 while Juan Monaco got past fellow Argentine Martin Vassallo Arguello 6-3 6-2. Another Argentine, Leonardo Mayer, beat Russian Igor Andreev 6-3 6-3.
In Wednesday's second-round matches Simon takes on Czech Tomas Berdych, Monfils plays Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga meets Russia's Mikhail Youzhny and Fernando Verdasco plays Spanish compatriot Oscar Hernandez.
Verdasco and Tsonga also have a chance to make it to the November 22-29 Tour Finals in London.

OK just to set the record straight I'm pretty sure it was after Montreal and before Cincinnati. In Montreal Murray beat Chardy, Ferrero, Tsonga, Davydenko and Del Potro. Before Montreal and Wimby he won Queens, beating Seppi, Garcia-Lopez, Mardy Fish, Ferrero and Blake. His preceding victory was in Miami which was quite a bit earlier (April), so should probably not be considered for the current form. I do not think these achievements qualify him as a true number one. Apparently you think he's been "winning everything".
Simon Reed made a statement after the last big tournement before the USO that Andy Murray was (AT THAT POINT) the real nr one and he was just then, he'd been winning everything. Nothing wrong in saying what was true. Things change from week to week, Murray exhausted himself and got an injury. Players come up , players go down, then they come up again. It's all a question of everything coming together at the right time and it's difficult to achieve. Anybody in the top 10 can beat each other on a chosen day. All you haters here are not going to stop Murray getting there when he is ready. Not ONE player in the top 10 is constantly consistant, Federer has the most experience and is best at it just now but i remmember distinctly he had to go through all the same rubbish before his career took off, they said he was a choker and had temperament problems. He matured, developed and got there just like Murray will.
When Simon Reed said Andy M. was "the real Nº 1", he wasn't. That was just after Wimbledon if I remember rightly. At that point Federer was both the "real" and the actual Nº1. Nadal was still the actual Nº2, but "really" out of it: that is to say, not a factor. Djokovic was actual Nº3 but had been dissappointing of late so was probably "real" Nº 4 or 5, and Murray was both "real" and actual Nº4. That is why so much ridicule was heaped on Simon Reed for that statement. Had he made it at the beginning of the USO, he may have been taken more seriously. But he didn't.

Wow Andy Murray has earned nearly 9 million in prize money, and i suppose one can double that with sponsor deals and treble it when he starts with Addidas next year. Won 59 matches and 5 titles this year and only lost 9. I guess he is doing pretty well. Keep it up Andy.
On return to SCOTLAND or what, he is useless!!! MURRAY IDIOT!!
FROM THE ATP SITE ATP World Tour No. 4 Andy Murray was impressive in his return to action Tuesday evening at the Valencia Open 500, dismissing Spanish wild card Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-3, 6-1 on his debut at the ATP World Tour 500 indoor hard-court tournament.
The top seed, playing his first match since representing Great Britain in Davis Cup competition in September, dropped just six points in the first four games as he raced to a 4-0 lead. World No. 77 Gimeno-Traver recovered one of the service breaks to cut the deficit to 3-4, but Murray was quickly back in his stride and broke once more in the ninth game to seal a one-set lead.
In the pair’s first ATP meeting, the Scot wasted no time in pressing home his advantage in the second set, breaking twice in the fourth and sixth games to seal victory after one hour.
The 22-year-old Murray, who has been sidelined with a left wrist injury since the Davis Cup, is one win shy of his 60th victory of the season after improving to a 59-9 match record. Together with Rafael Nadal, the Dunblane native leads the ATP World Tour with five titles, including at ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments in Miami (d. Djokovic) and Montreal (d. del Potro).
Murray next will face Argentine Leonardo Mayer, who defeated 2005
stefan94jovi, lol , start of story you mean !! Murray has always been a late maturing guy. He's only just reaching his potential now. Obviously you know damn all about tennis by your silly comments. One doesn't get to a GS final with luck. What g-a-y means i haven't the faintest idea. Grow up or go and play with your dolly or something.
OK James I guess that's one way of looking at it, but the way I tried to rephrase it was that "if the rankings were entirely faithful to REAL ABILITY, Murray would be number 1". Anyway john60p. You endorsed Reed's comment that Murray is the true number 1, did you not? So if he is the true number one and he doesn't choke, how come he is GS-less?
Ofcourse he shines isn't he hehh EUROSPORT.YAHOO? where was this site came from again....? EUROSPORT WILL THINK, FINALLY!!!!!!!!! OUR MURRAY!!!!!
I agree. I would bet he will in fact win more than 1 grand slam. Could you answer me? What's the difference between "should be number one" and "is the true number one". I am really curious why you think the two are significantly different. Thank you in advance.
Csaba manipulating comments again, lol. missed out at that point didn't you.
Andy Murray is doing a fine job, not reached his potential yet and improving all the time. There is absolutely no reason he shouldn't, when ready , win a grand slam.
The "real Nº1" would be the player whom other players would most like to avoid on the road to the finals in any given tournament. It would be a momentary perception, the way Nadal was regarded during the first six monthe of 2008, for example. I think that in the last major, the US Open, Andy Murray, at the beginning of the tournament, was definitely up there with Delpo as the most feared player. However, that doesn't mean he "should have been" Nº1: it takes 12 months consistently being "the real Nº1" to actually get there in the rankings.
Keep up the good work Andy, great to see you back and good luck for 2010, it could just be your year!! :-)
OK what's the difference between saying someone "should" be number one and saying someone is the true number one? Which one is more flattering? This is an honest question.
eh jon60p are u a total f-a-g reed dident just say that he is the true number 1 but also he sad he has beaten top guys all the time and that he got better results than federer(4 finals in slams 2 winnings) and nadal(1 slam only and 3 master titles) and that is totaly reed-icilous so shutt up murray isnt capable of winning slams and he never wil END OF STORY
There certainly is no point in arguing about the future (eg. Murray will never get another chance to win a major like the one he blew at Flushing Meadows this year) or the past (he could have won Wimbledon). We were talking about the present and I said he looked ordinary at Valencia and he did. Eurosport said he "shone". He didn't. The day he wins a GS event I will gladly change my opinion of him and also be quite happy to swallow my words. However, it will take more than that to change my opinion of Eurosport's journalism. I would only be satisfied with an article analysing why Federer's record of GS titles (whatever it ends up being) will not be beaten in our generation, and why he is "the real Nº1" even when he's at Nº2 spot. C'mon Simon, you can do it!!
Csaba, Reed has never said Murray "should" be number one, your manipulating to suit your own little campaign. He wrote an article saying at that point of time Murray was the true number one . Murray has never choked anywhere and is quietly improving his game to reach his full potential. Eurosport do not favour him, that just suits you to pretend they do. Murray is an extremely popular player and those putting ridiculous hate comments on here are scared as he threatens their particular favourites. Push off, i'm not interested in your @#$%.
lol Csaba, if murray does win a grandslam i look forward to seeing you lol
john60p I don't want to be annoying but I'd like to point out that you are on record on defending Reed's statement that Murray should be world number 1 but now you say he hasn't choked in the Grand Slams? So if he really is the best player in the world, why didn't he win any Grand Slams? I really think you're contradicting yourself with the sole purpose of contradicting anything that anybody says who you deem to be "Murray-hater" or something. I agree with James W, Murray is talented, he is hard-working, but I think he just lacks the attitude to be truly one of the greatest. Of course he may change that and when he does, I might even become a fan of his. Of course he is also right that Eurosport is really biased. And no, I'm not reading the British version of it.
JAMES W , No i don't want your opinion of anything. Since you wrote it i will tell you that he has never "choked" in a GS. At wimbledon his semi with Roddick could have gone either way and Roddick was unlucky not to win the final, he vastly improved his clay court game to get near the end at the French and in the US he was overtrained and a spent force. He has always been a late maturer and bit by bit he is getting it all into place.
