  1. I dont normally follow Tennis as a game but I do watch the occassional match. But this forum has some of the most ridiculous comments I have seen ...ranging from Racism to sheer stupidity. Some here think Serena plays Tennis for fun!! ...and want her to play more tournaments!!! If I was a player I wouldd only opt to play the most lucrative tournaments and leave the lesser ones for players below me ..why does this not make sense to some on this forum!!! Not only is it rational from a burnout standpoint ...but it makes sense moneywise!! WHICH IS WHY THEY PLAYED THESPORT IN THE FIRST PLACE!!! Unfortunately many of the comments that are anti-Serena have a racial bias ..so clearly the issues run deeper than just Tennis. Its a shame.

  2. It is a reality of life that sports people are being paid outrageously these days but we have to conceed that their performance generates the funds from which they get paid.We must also not forget there is something called the time value of money. What was the worth of $1 in 1992 vis a vis $1 today. When Fashanu was transferred for a million pounds in 1979,it made headlines but today that is peanuts as we now hear of 80 million pounds transfer. Comparisons can be odious at times. We are talking of diferrent eras.Nothing we say on this board can change the system.Let's just enjoy the game and rejoice with these players for their exploits.!!!

  3. #15, this is ridiculous ! Serena and Venus are two of my all time favorite players. I just find that this earnings comparison makes little sens given that many players won the three tournaments she won and sometimes another slam and 5 or 6 tour event more and earned half as much.
This has nothing to do with hate, I Love the sisters :)

Serena is gettig richer and richer day by day and you are nothing but low lifes, miserable beings.
Love you Serena and Venus !!!!!!!!

  7. Serena really can't win can she? She is criticised for not playing in Fed cup, yet if she did these same haters would blast her for coming in for the final and stealing the limelight!! People will have a pop at Serena for absolutely anything unfortunately and it is starting to get old now. She has confirmed her status as world number one in 2009 so people should just accept it and leave it! Yes, she didn't do too well in the smaller tournaments but I have a feeling she will crank her level up even higher with the full time return of Justine and Serena. She should be respected not lambasted, she won 3 of the 5 big ones after all.

  8. jjmalone, whilst your point appears at first to be a valid one, this is a totally different era from when the likes of Graf, Navratilova etc played. Without disrespecting them in any way, shape or form, the game has changed completely since then. You really cannot compare them i'm afraid.

  10. Kunle Kunle Kunle, how many times do i have to say i am not interestedinthese players? Fact is Serena entered 18 tournaments (Wozniacki entered 27) and she won only 3. In 1988 Steffi Graf won all four majors and the Olympics and still earned less than Serena. Too many players making a living by winning next to nothing. In fact i have heard the commentators talk about this saying the top 20 players win about 93% of all prize money. Good luck on Serena and Venus if they can earn all this for a few wins a year. I do not hate the williamses being black myself. I just wish someone would emerge to dominate or at least set up a rivalry like Federer/Nadal. One other point, If the headline said Safina sets prize record or any other player for that matter my feelings would be pretty much the same.

From jjmalone, on Tue 3 Nov 10:52AM
  11. 25, if she had have entered more tournaments then she would have the right to earn that much and there wouldnt be a problem, its the fact she chooses to enter the more lucrative tournaments, which she has a right to do, that gets on my nerves. as i said before, she managed to play through the pain in doha but pulls out of the fed cup that just happens to have a fraction, if any, of that prize money.

  12. Haters can continue to hate, infact the more you hate the more she grows richer, you complain when she does not go to all the tournament but imagine how much she would have banked if she had gone to all the tournament and won some, I guess she would have been richer. KEEP HATING and Serena WILL KEEP GETTING RICHER

  14. sanchez you can call me what you like, but even as a fan of the williams' you must be ashamed to watch them and their level of tennis this year and serena manages to walk away with that extortionate amount of money. why do you always mention the bnp you horrible LITTLE man?

  15. dandelionmancipar, lovely name, shame you just don't have a clue about market forces. Tong Jin K (alias ajpbolton) her earnings in one year can feed your entire village, you'd better think about it as that is where your BNP friends will soon be deporting you to. startoratora how long have they let you out for this time? and where is richmc23 to tell us why no one from Compton should be seen anywhere near the sport and as for the non-russian east europeans, shame about your misery, I saw dinara, serena, lena, sveta, vika and agnieszka all hoddled in the swimming pool playing sisters whilst some of you come here to peddle non-stop bigotry at the williamses. It seems the future belongs to those who embrace human fraternity after all whilst the rest of you are left lagging behind and stewing in your prejudices. Of course we won't stoop to your level so with any luck those who have made it to London and Chicago will soon learn our values and hopefully they will feed you some. Just as well home grown charlatans like annemcnaughtan and Katherine have departed this forum (allegedly), so they will spare us their bitterness about these news. Well said Serranno as always, thanks for joining in the effort to combat the drivel of these evil forces.

  16. This is @#$%. I'm not expecting women to play as well as men but for crying out loud, they get paid the same amount of cash for playing 2 sets with their shotmaking several times worse quality then men. If women got the same % as the tournament income they would get less than 10 %. The centre court isn't even 50 % packed when the women's singles GS final is played whils people kill each other to get to a men's one. To be fair, women should receive 30-35 % less $ than men just like in the old days

  19. thats a joke the men should be paid more for the more effort and quality of play the women are cr@p with women its how many double faults have been thrown in it is more important than the mens aces and equel prize money bug off come back when they have too play 5 sets and produce a match equvilent to a top 100 standard mens match

From bredafarrell, on Tue 3 Nov 7:47AM
  20. womens equal prize money is a joke, the quality of tennis, this year especially, has been boring, un-intresting and generally not inspiring. The ausie open final lasted 52mins to the mens lasting over 4hours yet serena got the same amount of money as nadal, if that happened in any other industry the governing body would be hauled before a tribunal.
