Rafael Benitez has defended his reign as Liverpool manager with the Anfield club facing European oblivion.
If Liverpool lose their Champions League clash with Group E leaders Lyon in the Stade de Gerland on Wednesday, they will be all but out of this season's competition and Benitez knows the pressure on him will reach even greater heights.
A seventh defeat in eight games would be something Liverpool have not experienced since Bill Shankly's appointment as manager, 50 years ago on December 1.
There would be more calls for Benitez's head but the Spaniard cut a defiant figure, saying: "I am very pleased to be here and I wish to be here for a long time."
"Two years ago we also needed to win our final three group matches, and we succeeded. We can do that again.
"The players here are strong enough for this challenge. The mentality of the group is good, and they are determined to win."

The only player that could equal Lucas in absolute useless inability is Vorinin. Benitez goes on about a 'quality squad'??? No, the majority of this squad are not fit to wear the famous red shirt, never mind to step out at Anfield, wearing it. The club is fading and falling fast. The manager is another Houllier, playing players out of position - Kuyte as a winger anyone??? Something I will never ever get my head around. He has no man-managment skills to speak off and treats us Liverpool supporters like fools, as if we do not know what where talking about. He goes on about how not winning trophies is not that important??? BENITEZ, WINNING TROPHIES IS THE SOLE REASON WHY WE EXIST AS A CLUB, SO PLEASE DON'T TAKE US SUPPORTERS OF OUR CLUB FOR FOOLS!
One other thing, I would just love to know what goes on at the coaching sessions, BECAUSE WE CANNOT SCORE { apart from Torres} TO SAVE OUR LIVES, AND WE CANNOT DEFEND SET-PIECES. The whole of the coaching staff SHOULD BE SACKED AS THEY ARE NOT MAKING ONE BIT OF DIFFERENCE TO OUR PERFORMANCES OUT ON THE PITCH! This is one very very angry Liverpool Supporter, and I want change, before the unthinkable happens - FOOTBALL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP ANYONE!?
He goes on about how there isn't enough money to be had...he has had 250 MILLION POUNDS over 5 YEARS and we are still no nearer to winning the Premier Title. Our best chance was last season, and we BLEW IT! The owners have a lot to answer for too, they should be GET OUT NOW PLEASE GO!!!
