Martin Johnson hs been voted the best player to have graced Twickenham during the stadium's 100-year history.

The England team manager and 2003 World Cup-winning captain received the O2 Player of the Century Award at the Rugby Football Union's gala centenary dinner.

Rugby fans were invited to choose from the 100 former players who have been inducted into Twickenham's Hall of Fame.

Johnson topped the poll ahead of legendary Welsh scrum-half Gareth Edwards and was joined in the top 10 by four of his 2003 World Cup team-mates - Jason Robinson, Lawrence Dallaglio, Richard Hill and Neil Back.

David Duckham and Rory Underwood were also shortlisted along with New Zealand winger Jonah Lomu and French full-back Serge Blanco.

The award forms part of Twickenham's centenary celebrations.

  1. If Duckham had been Welsh he would have been playing in the Welsh team of the seventies. Johnson wouldn't, but then how many who voted can remember David Duckham. most probably they only became fans of English rugby since England won the world cup.

  2. ask any international captain or player from his genreation, they will all say Jonno was a great, a great leader and a great player, theres no point in arguing this point unless you have ever played against or with the man, and those who have will say he was one of the best.and as far as captains go....few to none are better,

  3. Johnson was an England great but whether he was the greatest player to grace Twickenham is a completely different matter. Ahead of the likes of Lomu or Gareth Edwards is pushing it a bit.

  5. Martin Johnson "Great" don't think so,good yes, but great is a word used so easily especially where England are concerned, clutching at straws again it's a wonder England are not finding excuses already for Johnsohn's inabilities as a coach, it is good to see Johnny back but for how long ?
