Double world champion Fernando Alonso would think about quitting Formula One if the sport adopted a standard engine from 2010
"If they approved that, it would be the last straw. It would be time to think about retirement," the Spaniard said.
Formula One's governing body, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), said in October it intended to change the rules to force teams to use a standard engine from 2010 as part of a cost-cutting drive.
It has since launched a tender for bids to provide the engine, although it said this was only one of three options being considered.
Champions Ferrari, who could well figure in Alonso's future, and Toyota have already said they will consider pulling out if standard engines were imposed.
Alonso, champion with Renault in 2005 and 2006, said Formula One was going backwards technically with recent regulation changes.
"In 2005 we had a V10 engine with 1,000 horsepower," he said. "That was what was exciting for the driver, motor racing at the limit.
"We have gone from the futuristic to cars without grip or electronic aids which look like something from the past."
Alonso won two races for Renault this year with the French manufacturer recovering from early doldrums to end the year in fourth place overall.
In 2009, with the introduction of slick tyres and the new KERS device that recovers energy from the brakes to provide extra bursts of power, the Spaniard said he would be going for the title again.
"I cannot allow myself to start the championship without thinking I am going to win," he said. "My aim and that of the team is the title. It's a very clear objective, even if as the year progresses one may have to adapt to circumstances."

Hi-De-Hi my little men.
LINDA F, #53, could not have said it better myself!!!!!!
I am not a big fan of Alonso, but I totally agree with him. What is going to separate F1 from the rest of motorsports if this happens. It's bad enough that we lost North America races and he (Bernie) wants to turn the championship into a medal race, and now he wants to start messing with the engines of F1 race cars. When does all this nonsense with Bernie and the FIA stop. If the FIA and Bernie wants to broaden there fan base this is not the way to due it.
Slim Jim, in your post you said:
"Slim ( a McLarens fan )"
a MacLarens fan - Tut Tut Jim.
From 1967 until 1982 or so, most of the cars on the F1 grid were powered by the Cosworth DFV or DFY engine, and there was superb racing throughout this period. The boffins will all work their magic and car chassis and aerodynamics will all be different, so there will still be excellent F1 racing in the future. If the current F1 engines from all the manufacturers were on the test bed, they would all be giving out around the seven hundred horsepower mark, give or take a few horses here and there. They are so expensive, that's the problem here, two million pounds for each engine, that's unsustainable in today's world. Sense will prevail in the end, and we all would love F1 to continue in its most exciting form.
ref post 30 ... hey bill .. just what's your issue with my grammar or sp.
Standard engines???? there is no constructors competition with that, the pilots are going to be like f***ing robots .....what is happening to F1??? for that case us in Europe should go to America and watch NASCAR.....maybe it gets more interesting.......if not just stick to watching the Tom Cruise movie.......lol.....
IF standard engines were brought in it would be good.
At the moment the drivers title is heavily influenced by the car.
Over the last 2 years I'd say that McClaren has been the best car, not always the quickest, but far more reliable than the ferrari.
A few drivers won't like it, as they think they are so good they should have an advantage over the others.
It will level the playing field a little, so it would be interesting, however it could also be the pits. No one really having a speed advanatage, obviously they could have grip advantage, could cause less overtaking.
But then again I am not a mechanic, so don't hang me for that.
Alonso is thoroughly right and by the way a very worthy superb driver-champion contrary to the twisted demonic opinion of many backstabbers jealous and pathetic losers around.
It's about going backwards with this nonesense of a standard engine introduction and depriving the car of any electronic aims to make it more competitive though there are limitations to what a driver can do to make the car more driveable and faster.
Of course we do not want to see dummies on an auto pilot control but to see those superb skills that make all drivers different mentally and physically under different conditions.
Chris T, you've started taking your tablets again, welcome back to the world of the sane mate. I am trying to make it too!
Hey, stop blaming Fernando! He's right. F1 is all about innovation, including in electronics. But removing the electronic aid and introducing a standardized engines are two completely different things. Perhaps, in the future, the F1 races will take place on a computer, and world champions will be no older than 12. There are solutions, but people (Bernie&Max) can't see them. The best is the system used in DTM. But, I must say it again, F1 will not be F1 anymore without constant improuvement and innovation.
It would be a shame to see a single source supplier. F1 is about drivers and the teams. The manufacturers will be scared off if spanky and his mates get their way.
It would also be a shame to see the back of Alonso, even if he likes to bite the hand that feeds him, as I reckon he's the most complete driver in F1 at the moment.
However, this is probably just him being misquoted by our dear media dogs. Where else is he going to do what he loves and earn shed loads of cash?
I have it from a reliable source that Touron is actually a Formula 1 fan rather than a Ferrari fan. He's just writing this nonsense in order to make Ferrari fans look stupid- which of course we know they are not.
You can't fool us any more Touron. I got it straight from the horse's.
A bloke I know from Woking told me.
Oooooohhh... im soooo scared and we gonna miss you sooooo much... If thats wht you r thinking, you are an absolute @#$%.. you are not the only F1 driver on the track idiot.
2.)McLaren? Ferrari,Alo are saying they will quit where do the rest stand on this Thiessen and Briatore?Fota have made a snap decision and should think again.
Ber.nie should quit and give his job to beutiful Pet.ra !
1.)Single motors no way,F1 will be clonised and controlled by the short controller and only under 20 year olds on low pay will be driving.
Typical Alonso moaning yet again - cars without electronic aids ! I thought the best drivers should win without traction control et- that'sd called skill. I have to say however that A1 GP is far more exciting that F1 these days - until they remove the jokers that are Bernie and Max F1 will continue to slide depressingly downhill.
he should get his @#$% out the pool! a loser, a cheat and not required in the world of F1
Actually SS_A9X I don't think fools like Toury do realise that.
