Nathan Ellington converted a stoppage time penalty at the Britannia Stadium to earn Derby County a 1-0 victory over Stoke City and a place in the Carling Cup semi-finals.
The match had looked to be heading for extra-time but then, in the fourth minute of injury time, Stoke couldn't defend a late corner and the ball hit off Andy Griffin's arm which saw Rob Styles point straight to the spot.
Striker Ellington then showed coolness under pressure as he confidently slotted the ball past Steve Simonsen to send the 4,500 travelling supporters wild with delight.
It was just about what the Championship side deserved as they looked the most likely side to find a breakthrough during an absorbing second-half which was in stark contrast to the turgid opening 45 minutes.
The only notable moment in that opening period came when Richard Creswell put the ball in the net for Stoke but that effort was chalked off as he had handballed in the build-up.
Neither manager made any switches at half-time but the attitude of both sides changed markedly, especially on the Derby side, as they finally showed some ambition against their Premier League opponents.
Early in the second-half Kris Commons really should have put the Rams in front but he headed off the bar and then Rob Hulse could not turn the rebound in.
At other end, Fuller also missed a super chance from close range after a great cross from Rory Delap and Mamady Sidibe was similarly guilty not long after.
Derby then hit the woodwork for the second time in the 75th minute when Miles Addison got a foot on Przemyslaw Kazmierczak corner only to see it then hit the post.
In the final 10 minutes Stoke finally started to get on top of things and Roy Carroll had to make two great saves to deny Sidibe and Glenn Whelan with Fuller having a great chance to score from the rebound of the former effort.
The Potters also had plenty of chances to use their main weapon this season - Delap's long throw - but on each occasion he launched one of his bombs into the box Derby defended the danger.
Then came the late drama when Griffin, with his arms outstretched, handled the ball, and Ellington made no mistake to book Paul Jewell's side a place in the last four.

Stoke fans are upset and all seem to harp on about the worst team im prem history.
Well you should engage your brain(if you have one) before commenting because you have been beaten at home, 1-0 by the worst team in prem history!!!! what does that make you?
have a think lads, come on you Rams Keep the Faith!!!
stoke may be out but they beat that @#$% wba 5 out of last 6 times
Stoke are the worst kick and rush team ever in the prem (cannot call them a football team). Feel sorry for the fans who pay to watch that rubbish every week. Yes they have a few points under there belts now but they will not get many more now that the prem teams have got used to the big boot tactics. COME ON U BAGGIES........
So what, it's the first time derby have beat us for god knows how many years and any way premier league survival must be our priority (thats my argument and i'm sticking to it). On recent events, (ie last seasons prem table), derby are (and will be for a very long time), THE SHYTEST TEAM EVER IN PREMIER LEAGUE HISTORY. In all honesty i don't give a @#$% if stoke do go down as the bottom club at least DERBY will hold the most unwanted record, possibly, in the world. Even when stoke got relegated from the old first division, (having scored only four goals all season and under the two points for a win system), they still got more than eleven points. Revel in your success for the moment derby fans, cus it will be a long time before your sh1th0le of a ground will host the likes of Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and who can forget the mighty Stoke in a competetive league match. UP THE POTTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Worst premiership teams are the ones who can fing stay in it.......!
s

I got one thing to say to Stoke supporters.....HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OK DERBY FANS HOW MUCH DID YOU PAY ROB STILES FOR A DECISION THAT WAS NOT EVEN A PENALTY AND A TOTAL DISGRACE TO DECENT FOOTBALL JUST HOPE THE SAME THING HAPPENS TO YOUR TEAM WITH 10 SECONDS TO GO
Derby County take one small step to greatness, and one giant leap for derby fans.
