Carling Cup - Wenger points finger at Bendtner

Eurosport - Wed, 03 Dec 13:39:00 2008

Arsene Wenger cast doubt over the future of Arsenal's young forwards after criticising his off-form attackers as a series of missed chances enabled Burnley to claim a famous 2-0 League Cup win at Turf Moor.

2008-2009 Carling Cup Burnley-Arsenal Nicklas Bendtner - 0

Two goals from Scottish midfielder Kevin McDonald, who rejected moves to Liverpool and Celtic to join Burnley from Dundee in July, secured the Clarets' place in the semi-finals.

But a catalogue of poor finishes, most notably by Danish striker Nicklas Bendtner, led to Arsenal's quarter-final exit and manager Wenger admitted that too many of his forwards under-performed.

"We played quite well, but we had six one versus ones and lost 2-0, so that sums it up," he said.

"We just did not have the right focus in front of goal and that made the difference. We lost a game we should never have lost.

"We had plenty of chances but when you do not score, you have to ask why. You can praise their keeper but also question your own strikers.

"Many of my players were not fazed by the game, though, and that is a positive from the game.

"So many of them gave absolutely everything, but in front of goal, you have to be much more clinical than we were and I think we were a bit naive in taking our chances.

"Had we scored at any time, then the complexion of the whole tie would have been different, but it was always us chasing the game and them playing on the counter-attack. That's the easiest way to deal with the game."

Burnley proved too energetic and hungry for Arsenal and the Championship club deservedly added Arsenal's scalp to those of Chelsea and Fulham, who they defeated in previous rounds.

Manager Owen Coyle, whose team will learn their semi-final opponents in Saturday's draw, now insists that his team can go all the way to final.

He said: "We will enjoy the semi-finals. It doesn't matter who we get. We've got a great chance.

"There was a lot of talk of Arsenal and the young players they have, but we've shown that we have some good young players ourselves."

Danish goalkeeper Brian Jensen was a star performer for the home side and he has backed Coyle's team to progress beyond the last four.

Jensen said: "It was always going to be a massive task for us so full credit to the lads because we are there.

"All the cameras were here so they must have known there could be an upset. We are in the semi-finals now, so why can't we go on and win it? Let's see how far we can go."

Arsenal had the opportunity to strike first when Fran Merida's precise pass released Bendtner on five minutes, but Jensen set the tone for an impressive performance by saving well from his fellow Dane.

Less than a minute later, the home side were ahead after Arsenal's failure to clear a Chris Eagles cross left McDonald with a tap-in from six yards.

Despite their impressive first-half display, Burnley would have known that Arsenal would come back at them strongly after the break.

And Wenger's team almost equalised in stunning style on 49 minutes when Merida jinked past three Burnley defenders before sending a right-foot strike inches wide.

Burnley matched Arsenal's attacking intent with their own, however, and Coyle's team pushed forward in search of the second goal that would as good as seal the game.

It came on 57 minutes when Eagles's quick throw-in released McDonald in the Arsenal penalty area.

The former Dundee midfielder ghosted past Mark Randall before hitting his right-footed strike into the far corner.

  1. I think Wenger should stop the Habit of using this young players for an important Cup like this, the likes of Chelsea and Man Utd.Arsenal have not lifted this cup and i think we need matured players to make this dream a reality.I think this is a leason, and we are tired of watching only entertaining foothball,

  2. Same old arsenal, guns the biggies and are rubbish against the smaller teams that play with their hearts. NO TITLE FOR THEM AGAIN THIS SEASON.

  3. ok granted he is the thickest player i have ever seen putting on football boots and the way he shoots i am convinced he is more suited to rugby (johnson take note) but with those pink boots he will be battered black and blue (serves him right) i still say he is not a footballer i have seen babies score the chances he missed i am guessing his excuse would be the ball did not match my boots.
on evidence last night he should be dropped and the boys behind him given a chance (vela, simpson, fonte, merida etc).
c'mon when we let hoyte go we should have executed the two for one deal and gotten rid of him as well.

  4. i can see anywhere in this thing where arsene wenger has pointed at Bentner.....what is wrong with the media?

  5. Arsenal should stop undermining "smaller" teams. They is why they lost. They thought Burnley were a push over and lacked seriousness. Burnley deserved to win the game after such a poor show by the young gunners.

  6. Arsene Wenger seems to be one of the managers that can't defeat the "smaller" sides in football. Look at the their performances so far this season, they have beaten both MANU and Chelsea and yet have lost to teams like Stoke and now Burnley (which is a lot better than Stoke by the way).

I think the problem with is that the players' so badly want to prove how good they are against the big sides and therefore play well BUT then undermine the ability of the so called "smaller" sides and then lose.

Wenger will need to address this issue and soon they can't carry on like this. I'm a MANC but I love the way Arsenal play their brand of football its awesome to watch but also feel for their fans how long they'll be able to handle being tropheless again is beyond me.

  7. I can't see anyhwere in this article that Wenger names Bendtner so your heading is a little unfair. However, it's no real surprise that Wenger thinks Bendtner isn't up to it, only surprising it's taken him this long to work it out.

  8. It is indeed a problem when strikers can't score but I think Wenger got it wrong. The main problem is the way Arsenal always easily concedes goals. The best attacking team starts from the back, with a good defense.
Conceding those goals did put more pressure on inexperienced players.
Get it right Arsene : get some experienced players ESPECIALLY in a defensive system (there is no cover from mid-field for instance).

  9. Peri, don't make the mistake of rising up against the drivel written by the children who use this site. Most of them have no idea about football, as is clearly represented on this string. Wenger hasn't whinged about losing, he has explained why we lost. Our strikers were poor, Burnley were a better team on the night, they put their chances away, and were generally up for the fight and therefore got the win they deserved. Good luck to them, and to Watford tonight!

  10. I have said it is severally that NIKOLAS BENDTNER is not a striker. He does not worth the premiership nor the championship. He lacks everything that makes a footballer. He cannot control the ball, he lacks vision, he is zero in the air as he cannot nod the ball down for his team mates and cannot make a through pass to his team mates. he laze around the field as if there is nothing nothing at stake. i have over one thousand footage of this guy ineptitude but it seeems our untouchable wenger just realised that even a championship club want accept this moron on loan. please, WENGER let this boy go, if you keep for thext five he wont develop. BENDTNER, please leave our darling club and go. you do worth wearing that no. 26 jersey. please go to italy where you might fit to the lower league.

  11. Arsenal could win most of their games including against Burnley, if they give some respect towards their opponents who are below them in the league table and not be too over confidence. When they play against big teams like Chelsea and Man U, they show respect and more focus towards the games and the results shows. I guess that part of maturity still lack in this young team. I also think Adebayor and Bedtner should go because Arsenal have good feeder but these two are not good enough striker.

  12. well, thewookie, the same can be said for alex ferguson who never will give an interview after a match is lost, rafa benitez is also rare to give an opposing team the credit they deserve, and mourinho.. need i say more?

  13. I see that once again Arsene Wenger cannot give praise to another team when they are beaten!!!

Why is this man such a bad loser?! If they win it is because they are OBVIOUSLY the better side. If they lose it is because something has not gone right for them. NEVER that the opposition played a better game, or had a good gameplan. He makes me sick!

Just for once it would be good to see him give someone else some praise! Even Old Whiskeynose can do that now and again!!!

  15. I'm glad people are beginning to see that Bendtner is not Premiership top 4 quality. I have been saying it for ages! Yes he scores goals every now and then, but so would i if i had the rest of the arsenal team behind me giving me the opportunities he gets. I think it is time Wenger puts Vela ahead of him in the pecking order! The boy is genius! He is playing for the Mexico national team (admittedly he got sent off last time) but he isn't above Bendtner in the order?!
Take nothing away from Burnley though, I thought they deserved their win last night (and thats from an arsenal fan) because they worked extremely hard, chased everything and didnt allow anything to go to their heads (i'm looking at bendtner there again too). He wears pink boots yet he has done nothing substantial in the sport. He strutted around the pitch expecting to be the best one there last night. When he did get the ball he either missed 1-on-1s (plenty of them) or hogged the ball and didnt pass! Time for him to go I think, then we'll give our young strikers (vela, simpson etc) the chance to come through properly.

Of course, now the young'uns are out of the league cup, where are they going to get experience this season? They need to be playing or Wenger's youth plans will get knocked back a full year! Expect to see vela, lansbury and ramsay play more of a role in the 1st team squads from now, especially with our injuries and full schedule through deceber/january. Hopefully Merida will get in on the act too!

  17. Too much whinging about Arsenal and not enough credit being given to Burnley in my opinion. Good luck to them. It would be nice to see them get to the final.

  18. First of all, i'm not going to knock wenger, he made the Carling a proving ground to test out Bendtner and Carlos Vela. I hope he'll place Vela in front Nicolas in the pecking order of Forwards, Bendtner can be a great supersub, but not a great Starter. This Cup doesn't mean a thing to Wenger, if it did, he'd be playing his first team, that the price he paid for winning at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, then to play the Carling Cup 2 days later, Burnley had their game 3 days before the cup match. Be Serious, which domestic cup would you rather win, Carling or FA Cup?

From Neo, on Wed 3 Dec 12:06PM
  19. Arsenal isn't meant to be a youth academy, it's supposed to be a premiership team trying to win trophies. This team with bendtner up front wouldn't have had a chance against the team with henri and vierra.stop messing about wenger, and start winning some trophies.
