Heikki Kovalainen has said he wants a new fuel strategy from McLaren in 2009 to give him the same chance of success as world champion team-mate Lewis Hamilton.
Kovalainen said that the team was keen for him to run a heavier fuel load in the final phase of qualifying at each meeting to allow an alternative strategy for success, should the option for Hamilton be compromised.
As a result, the Finn finished the season back in seventh place in the points table and some 45 points shy of Hamilton's title-winning total.
"Only once was I lighter on fuel than Lewis, and that was at Silverstone, where I was on pole," the 27-year old driver pointed out to Switzerland's Motorsport Aktuell magazine.
"In all other qualifying sessions, I was fuelled more heavily - often the heaviest guy in the top six or seven. If I had been at the front more often, then I would have won more frequently."
Kovalainen managed only three podium finishes all season and was unable to help push McLaren into top spot in the constructors' championship.
While that created doubt about his position at Woking in the mind of outsiders, he said he was not under threat of losing his seat for 2009 - and warned that he will be looking for a change of direction.
"The team knew exactly what was taking place," he said. "It's something we have to look at for the coming year."
Kovalainen will return to the track when group testing restarts in Spain later this month. He is slated to run at both Jerez and the new Portimao circuit in Portugal before the end of the year, while Hamilton is not due to return to the cockpit until early January.
The new McLaren will be unveiled on January 16 in Woking.

u all wrong. heikki is a fantastic driver. he is just unlucky last season. stop complaning about heikki. i think that heikki can challange for the world title.
if heikki come to ferrari that is the best thing i have never seen. Heikki Kovalainen and Kimi raikkonen. fantastic lineup. i hope that heikki can challange for the title in 2009.
kovalainen hss better chances in bobsleigh
lots of walls to hit with no consequences ...!!!
he should realise how lucky he is to be with mclaren and shut up
bbboooooooooooooo
If Mclaren did what they did to Mr. Alonso, imagine what will be the "strategy" for Mr. Kovalainen...
so all that time people were slating Alonso about whinging about equality, he was probably telling the truth!!
kirstielundgaard all i am suggesting is you are a tit cant u write something different.
paul t: The simple answer is no. There are a whole raft of legal hurdles, including the following:
1) You need to prove the FIA is liable
2) It is arguably the teams that provide the entertainment, the FIA provide the forum
3) There is no promise or guarantee made to us of a certain level of entertainment
4) The 'unfair' administering of any rules is between the teams and FIA only
While it would be nice to force the FIA into acting in the best interests of the viewing public, there is no legal footing for us to force them to do so. It would be like trying to sue the FA for the relegation of Sheffield United from the Premiership or suing FIFA because your team didn't qualify for the World Cup because the referee gave a penalty after a foul outside the box.
clement l - you mean the same Vettel who OWNED Hamilton in Brazil?
At least Heikki is speaking out now, rather than saying it years later like Rubens seems to be doing. Heikki has only confirmed what most could already see - Lewis was the teams number one driver from his first day in F1, and Ron Dennis ALWAYS has favourties, as DC implied in an interview - never do both drivers have the full support of the team.
hah! equality!? he should drive in a manner to warrant such privileges. gret in quali, but not so in races . . . all show and no go
"double world champ A L O N S O" is the king of all douche bags
double world champ A L O N S O is by far the finest DRIVER ON THE CIRCUIT
just give him the right car next year & watch out
h .kovalinen should shut up and enjoy money he does not deserve in maclaren and should explain to us the mac fans why he was behind vettel for the whole race ................mazbe it was team orders too.............or was it to help hamilton
well eliramson
Ur basically saying that Heikki came all the way to F1 to be Hamilton's pet and u thank him for that!!!!!!! Well maybe that suits hamilton's fans but the guys seems to have enough (like all who will be hamilton's teammates) to play second role even in the sets of tires and the mechanical parts he gets on his car.
My advice to u Heikki will be to leave Mclaren cause for Ron Penis there will be only on driver
Thanks The Voice of Oxperience. We analyse things deeply
Well done Heikki, pretend at least the same equality given to Rubens Barrichello in Ferrari...signing-on fees I mean!
Eliramson No. 66 comment, what a super, balanced appraisal of the year that Heikki Kovalainen has had at Mclaren. Excellent, well said.
I am afraid that whoever reported this may have twisted whatever Heikki might have said. Surerly heiki is unlikely to be a top driver in F1 but believe me he is one of a heck of a driver, a perfect team mate for any driver and not just Hamilton. Without him I can tell you that Hamilton would not have won the championship although he can not win the championship for Hamilton. A single example, take the last race in Interlago Brazil, if Heikki hadn't covered for Hamilton its very likely that somebody would spun him out of the track and out of the race. REMEMBER THIS SINGLE INCIDENT HOW HE PROTECTED HIM. Very few team mates would have done that. Thanks Heikki, YOU ARE A BRILLIANT DRIVER AND PLAYS FOR THE TEAM RATHER THAN YOURSELF. And thats what a team need.
unfortunately it would be disregarded Paul. It was so obviously pro Ferrari this year that it really became a joke to supporters of every other team. Max and Bernie are just a couple of power happy old farts. It's almost like they want us to see how they can fix things, hand out unjust penalties and say they actively support one driver and will "help him all I can". Almost like a statement of "look how powerful I am". F1 is going down the toilet.
Hey ginger_gitt, re post number 46...
You're not such a git after all!
Surely the strategy options were not meat to hamper Heiki as this article leads us to believe. McLaren, just like all the other teams wanted to win the constructors championship. They wouldn't sacrifice that by doing something that they didn't believe would help the team. Heiki had chances this year and never came up to the mark in the end. To try and blame the team (which I don't think he is as it is just clever journalism here) makes him look like a bad loser. He wasn't that far off the pace in qualifying all year. It was his racing times that were very poor.
