Gaffney Rings The Changes

Fri 04 Jan, 12:14 PM

Saracens boss Alan Gaffney has rung the changes ahead of Sunday's trip to the Memorial Ground in Bristol as his men look to build on their third place in the Guinness Premiership.

Saracens fell to Newcastle at home last weekend, but big guns Richard Hill, Andy Farrell and Glen Jackson are among those returning to the starting line-up for the game, with Iain Fullarton and Kameli Ratuvou also back in the team.

Prop Matias Aguero is also given a full debut after impressive performances in the Guinness A League matches. The Italian international picked up a neck injury on World Cup duty last year and only returned to full fitness in December.

On the bench, Tom Mercey comes in for the rested Cencus Johnston with Richard Haughton and Adam Powell also among the replacements.

"We know we didn't perform last weekend against Newcastle and that was disappointing in front of a big crowd," said Gaffney.

"We've made changes this week and we will be going to Bristol to win the game, but we're under no illusions as to the size of the task ahead of us.

Bristol have a very proud home record and we are expecting a very tough test.

"We've given a full debut to Aguero this weekend after what has been a delayed start to his Saracens career. He's performed well in the A-games and deserves the chance to show what he can do."

Form: Bristol are winless in their last three Guinness Premiership matches since a 39-3 victory at home to Leeds on 21 October. Bristol have lost only one of their last eight home games in the Premiership: 13-26 to Leicester on 16 September. Saracens ended a three game winning run with the 19-22 defeat by Newcastle on Sunday. Saracens have lost just one away game in the Guinness Premiership this campaign: 30-34 at Sale on 19 October. The two teams have already met in the EDF Energy Cup this season with Saracens winning 45-15 at Vicarage Road on 4 November. Bristol have won just one of their last seven matches against Saracens: 19-13 at Vicarage Road in the Premiership in February 2006. Amazingly, the last time Saracens lost at Memorial Stadium was way back on 27 December 1999!
