FOOTBALL Ridsdale - 0

After seeing the destitution in which he left Leeds United, Cardiff City fans will be shaking in their hobnail boots after hearing chairman Peter Ridsdale talking about the future of in-demand midfielder Joe Ledley: "If I were a gambling man, I would bet money Joe will still be with Cardiff City once the transfer window closes..." Chilling stuff.

Remember never to trust the father of Erlend Hanstveit with your secrets. Hanstveit senior has told press that his Norwegian defender son has been the subject of a bid by Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Mick McCarthy. "Wolves are a big club and we'd obviously be interested to hear what they have to say," he blurted, unable to contain himself any longer. Later in the article, he proceeded to recount tales of his son's bed-wetting, first kiss and sketchy school reports.

Barnsley manager Simon Davey has admitted the club are "mysteriously losing contact" with the agent of German defender Dominik Werling. If you ask me, he should blame those not-in-my-back-yard hippies. People complain about the erection of potentially dangerous mobile phone masts, but this is exactly what happens without them... The Reds boss has tabled a bid for the player he brought to the club in pre-season but says Werling's agent is "touting him around."

Charlton Athletic manager Alan Pardew says he won't be trying sign Danny Mills on a permanent transfer from Manchester City after a poor disciplinary record during his four-month loan spell at the Valley earlier this season. "The disciplinary record played a part in the decision," Pardew said. "There were a couple of times when he went close to the wire before he got sent off and I can't afford that situation anymore." Well, knock me down with a feather; Danny Mills is still a petulant, ill-disciplined clod? What? And Pele's retired? Why didn't anyone tell me?

As old John Steinbeck once said, "If you throw a great handful of beans at an upturned thimble, one is pretty sure to go in." Colchester United have confirmed that they have bid for six players in a delightfully scattergun approach to the transfer window. "In this day and age, what happens is that you make these bids and you know that you're not going to get every target," said U's boss Geraint Williams. "I cannot see six players coming in - but we have made six bids."

Meanwhile, Sheffield United manager Bryan Robson is "monitoring" Portsmouth's Richard Hughes, a fittingly sinister confession on the week that the new series of Big Brother began.

Hull City boss Phil Brown has unwittingly hinted at his favourite Christmas present; a Hi-de-Hi DVD box set. Brown says that Stuart Elliott will be allowed to leave the Tigers, but only if the club receive the right financial deal for the 29-year-old. "I've had that conversation with Stuey this week but I've spoken to a number of players about their futures. It's up to me to keep a happy camp." Ho-de-ho, responded Elliott.

Norwich's England U21 keeper Joe Lewis is in advanced talks over a surprise £400,000 move to ambitious League Two side Peterborough United.

And Plymouth Argyle have also received a £250,000 offer for out-of-favour striker Rory Fallon from League One club Southend United, although there has been no confirmation whether the bid has been accepted or not.
