BMW Sauber drivers Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica have said the new breed of Formula One cars will be less safe than those in 2008.
The pair said the revised aerodynamic regulations, and the wider front wing in particular, could mean an increased likelihood of contact with other cars.
The rear wing is now narrower and taller, while the front wing is lowered and widened by 40cm.
"I can imagine that now we will see many more touches," German Heidfeld said. "Sitting inside the car, the driver cannot see the wing although, of course, you know it is there.
"However, in previous seasons, you knew you could take a chance (and not damage the wing); now I think there will be more problems, especially at the start.
"If everything continues as it has been, the 2009 season will be very dangerous."
Pole Kubica, who joined Heidfeld in using the new aero package in post-season testing, was of similar opinion.
"It is too wide," he told Marca. "I am curious to see how many of these wings will be flying in the first race in Australia - I believe that they are going to be flying from all sides."
Heidfeld also suggested that the revised configuration will make the cars harder to drive in 2009.
"After my first lap in testing, I thought about returning to the pits because the other drivers (without the new dimensions) did nothing but pass me," the veteran said.
"Compared to them, it seemed that I had stopped - and, in addition to that, it is very easy to spin. It is very, very dangerous."

I think these drivers claiming the new regs are "dangerous" should be pulled up by the FIA. I think I am safe to assume that these cars will, at minimum, have to meet the same safety standards as last year, so how can they be more dangerous? Surely the car only becomes so if the driver isn't good enough to be behind the wheel? F1 is about 20 (or maybe 18 next year) of the world's very best drivers racing wheel to wheel, so they should all stop moaning and do what they are paid for and prove they should be there. I doubt Schumacher, Senna, Prost or Mansell would be moaning this much, and I doubt the greats I never got to see would be either.
F1 cars have always been dangerous, there hasn't been a fatality in a F1 race since 1994 and Ayrton Senna's tragic incident, but complaining that the cars are going to be more difficult to drive won't wash. These guys are meant to be (and paid as such) the best drivers in the world. They took away traction control, there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth, nothing happened, the better drivers showed they had skills (Silverstone, Spa, Monza). We'll see how bad this all is at Melbourne in three months, I will be fascinated to see what transpires, maybe a few surprises!
The greatest cause of accidents in 2009 will be due to the front wings flying off after puncturing the rear tyres of the car in front, especially at the first corner of every race.
If they put cars like that on the track when the season starts, I won't be watching, and I suspect that I won't be alone. The over-regulation in this sport looks like it's finally going to kill it. Want excitement in F1? I went to Long Beach in 1982 when they had the 1.5L turbo formula, it was absolutely wild. The cars took incredible skill to extract their enormous performance, the sounds were fantastic. I'm sure someone will tell me why those cars were totally unacceptable, but compared to what it looks like is coming in 2009, I'd take watching a race with the 1982 cars (with appropriate safety updates to the cars and circuits) any day.
As has been said in posts on the page, this odd-looking BMW is a hybrid 2008 car on grooved Bridgies, before I pass comment I'll wait until the real thing is launched, until then.......
m.e.jenner: Nevermind, I hope you enjoyed the conversation you didn't have nonetheless. And mouronroute won't be waving the flag at Silverstone, not with him running the entire event. He invented MG as a brand you see, him and his Ferrari friend, so he'll be quaffing Champagne with the Crown Prince of Dubai in the back of a one-off chauffeur driven MGA from the 1930s.
I really do have such hatred for bernie eccelston, his stupid idea's just to make F1 interesting have just made the sport out to be a joke, the new cars look absolute s**t to be quite honest, the 08 cars were works of art, so sleek and aerodynamic. If the bmw guys are now sayin their dangerous which I had thought they would due to the stupid wing combinations if the other teams will say the same, I can't see why not so I will not be surprised if we see 09 cars with the 08 spec dimensions tbh
Thy look like lego kits gone wrong just plain ugly that rear wing looks so out of place I bet the designers hated turning out these follys what has formula 1 come to
voodoo, he'll be there waving the black and white flag!
It's snowing down y'ere in the South - so sorry for all you who have to go to work (chuckle).
Anyway, MGA, honey, where were we..... I like black caps best, and after that red ones.
Morning all, don't any of you have jobs to go to?
MGA - from last night, the event I will be doing in May is the Broadland MG Owners Heritage Run, I'm near the East coast. I might look into to doing the Norwich Union run this year as well. It ends at Silverstone so I can say hello to touronroute at the finish.
