BMW duo: New F1 cars are dangerous

Eurosport - Sun, 04 Jan 14:07:00 2009

BMW Sauber drivers Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica have said the new breed of Formula One cars will be less safe than those in 2008.

FORMULA 1 2008 - Christian Klien tests 2009 BMW Sauber car - 0

The pair said the revised aerodynamic regulations, and the wider front wing in particular, could mean an increased likelihood of contact with other cars.

The rear wing is now narrower and taller, while the front wing is lowered and widened by 40cm.

"I can imagine that now we will see many more touches," German Heidfeld said. "Sitting inside the car, the driver cannot see the wing although, of course, you know it is there.

"However, in previous seasons, you knew you could take a chance (and not damage the wing); now I think there will be more problems, especially at the start.

"If everything continues as it has been, the 2009 season will be very dangerous."

Pole Kubica, who joined Heidfeld in using the new aero package in post-season testing, was of similar opinion.

"It is too wide," he told Marca. "I am curious to see how many of these wings will be flying in the first race in Australia - I believe that they are going to be flying from all sides."

Heidfeld also suggested that the revised configuration will make the cars harder to drive in 2009.

"After my first lap in testing, I thought about returning to the pits because the other drivers (without the new dimensions) did nothing but pass me," the veteran said.

"Compared to them, it seemed that I had stopped - and, in addition to that, it is very easy to spin. It is very, very dangerous."

  2. MGA - Looks like over the years you have had the set! I've just written my entry form for the regional MG charity run in May for my little Standard 8. The annual event is open to all cars and last year it was the turn of the Maserati, good fun.

The tragedy is that it is all about attention and bitterness.

mr hamiltons son say he stay with mclaren men for life. that nice for him but what do mclaren men say? you see mclaren is now german owned. the parent company is the mercedes benz which is the german. the engine is the german engine. everything about the team is the german. mr hamiltons son now the swiss gentleman he eat much cheese and sings in the morning at mountains. mr hamiltons father is also now the swiss man. in fact there nothing british about this team at all. even the man who tidy up the garage after the race has moved to switzerland with his mother. switzerland is owned by the german. my friends the whole team is GERMAN - and guess what - so is mr glock. now you see why the time stand still for mr glock on the last lap. like he in the time warp. not even the people abducted by the alien lose the amount of time he lost on that last lap. 10. MGA - Good luck with your search but surely the collection is never complete, is it? Very expensive but that red Sebring GT replica looks fun and don't tell me you have an MGA Twin Cam? I have driven an MGC GT and that was way back in the late 60s just six months after passing my test. It was a long time before I drove anything faster and I was the envy of my friends at the time.

  19. MGA - Did you get the MGC?

From Grey Scale, on Sun 4 Jan 6:58PM
  20. I'll answer that for you MGA. The small pea brained idiot cannot think of anything more constructive to say. If he could the time lapse would be that great it would be an old subject. On the other subject of sharing technology, surely these designers are on a considerable wage. If there is no results forthcoming, then lower the wages.
