Pietersen-Moores rift grows

Eurosport - Sun, 04 Jan 15:38:00 2009

England may have to decide between keeping Kevin Pietersen as their captain or Peter Moores as their coach after the star batsman called for an end to the duo's "unhealthy" relationship.

Kevin Pietersen - 0

The News of the World - the Sunday tabloid in which Pietersen has a column - said there appeared "little prospect" of the pair working together on the upcoming tour of the West Indies, where England will look to gather momentum ahead of their bid to reclaim the Ashes later this year.

It added there had been a "complete breakdown in what was an already fraught relationship" and said attempts by ECB managing director Hugh Morris to broker a peace deal between Pietersen and Moores now had an "impossible" chance of success.

Pietersen, who broke off from a holiday in his native South Africa to hold talks with Morris on Saturday, stopped short of calling for Moores's sacking.

But the 28-year-old told the News of the World: "This situation is not healthy, we have to make sure it is settled as soon as possible and certainly before we fly off to the West Indies.

"Everybody has to have the same aims and pull in the same direction for the good of the England team."

Contrary to earlier reports, the paper said the exclusion of former England captain Michael Vaughan from the West Indies squad was not the cause of Pietersen's bust-up with Moores, insisting the pair had fallen out long before the tour party was announced.

Pietersen took over as captain following Vaughan's tearful resignation during August's home series loss to South Africa.

He won widespread admiration for the way he recently led England, who lost the series 1-0, back to India for a two-Test tour which risked being abandoned because of the Mumbai terror attacks.

Moores is on a one-year rolling contract and any attempt to sack him could cost the ECB as much as £250,000 and leave them scrambling to find a new coach days before England arrive in the Caribbean on January 21 for a four-Test tour.

However, a "dressing-room source" told the News of the World: "There is no way Pietersen and Moores can work together, they're just too far apart.

"The ECB are damned if they do and damned if they don't. If they back KP, then there's massive problems among the backroom staff.

"But if they go with the coach, then the best player becomes disillusioned, they possibly lose a captain and there is a huge fracture."

Moores, given a chance by Saturday's Sun to play down his row with Pietersen said: "I hope you understand that I can't really comment at this stage."

Former Sussex coach Moores replaced 2005 Ashes-winner Duncan Fletcher in the England job after last year's World Cup in the West Indies.

In Moores's 22 Tests as coach, England have won eight, lost six and drawn eight.

But seven of those victories came against New Zealand and the West Indies, two teams below England in the world rankings, while a win over South Africa, in Pietersen's first match in full charge, only took place after the series had been lost.

  4. Its not about KP or for that matter the appalling coach Moores its about the Game England could not keep going down the negativiy road any longer, thats why Capello was brought in for football,
I applaud any captain who tries but he must have quality players at hand who are prepared to work hard and get their head down, My friends in Sydney Auss think we are a joke? so ECB get your heads of the sand, and sort it

  6. K P is a joke and should never have beeen made captain. He needs to learn how to bat sensibly first. Anyone who scores more centuries than 50's on the surface looks great, in reality it is the other way round. it shows that he is getting out cheaply too often. He is a dangerous batsman but teams know he is mentally week and is easy to get out early. Dont believe me do the maths, 15 good innings but only 2 that really count.
If i was a captain i would rub my hands together seeing KP walking out to the middle in the second innings as his batting is rubbish. No man is bigger than the game and unless he learns to bat sensibly he should be the one going

  7. But surely the "men in suits" must have seen this coming the moment they appointed K.P as skipper? Or did they really expect him to be all cuddles and hugs with Moores when it's so obvious that the two of them are like oil and water? The Bell situation is frankly laughable, too funny for words in fact. Owais Shah must be spitting feathers.

It reminds me of a similar situation years ago when the selectors constantly picked Derek Pringle, while at the same time making Botham stay at home and watch the games on tv. Madness.

  8. Melanie, you will just have to use capital letters next time, it does take some penetrating with some people!
Gilbertson, I have little respect for Moores based on his achievements, and that really is the hub of it all, what have we achieved in his two years? - I think that he can hardly be labelled as a troublemaker. He is too meek and mild to be an agitator surely? I have openly criticised him for his lack of visibility and his attitude of distancing himself during matches. He seems a decent guy but clearly out of his depth.
On the KP issue, he obviously has a problem with KP, well chronicled now, but feels with Vaughan at KP's side he would be fighting a double challenge, hence his reluctance.
It is probably nothing to do with Vaughan's form but everything to do with the challenge to his position.
Bell is another of my pet subjects but he must be feeling like sh.t at the moment knowing KP wants him out but retaining his place as a result of a political battle.
We are a shambles, aren't we? Would the Aussies accept a situation like this? - you bet they would not.

  10. tani1959, you've obviously got a problem reading English....For the 2nd time, PIETESEN IS A SELECTOR!! Becoming captain automatically gives you a seat on the England selection commitee, in fact as captain Pietersen has the largest say of all the selectors on who tours, who plays and who doensn't, so the point that you are vainly trying to make is just nonsense. Do you know anything at all about cricket, or would you like a diagram?

From melaniepoynton, on Mon 5 Jan 10:01AM
  11. I see the media seem to be concentrating on Moores stats as coach of England and yet really quiet about KPs record as captain.I agree with a lot of people that KP is an exceptional player but at the end of the day he is not a selector so if if his choices are ignored he should just get on with it.
BTW his record is played 8 won 0 drawn 1.
Not comfortable reading but something which has been overlooked in all the hue and cry over this rift.

    From tani1959, on Mon 5 Jan 7:50AM
  12. Moores should have been sacked ages ago. He is the worst coach in the world.
Hoggard should have been back ages ago. He is the best swing bowler in the world.

  13. If you want the Ashes, you better act now. Looks like KP wants full control of England cricket. I know he is not solely responsible, but he is the one on the field calling the shots. Recent results are the reality. If England want to be competitive with the Aussies, then they better stop playing like Sri Lanka. Changing after the WI tour will be too late. There are only three ways to fix the team, selection, selection, selection. Good luck with that.

From John C, on Sun 4 Jan 10:46PM
  14. Moores is a liability who has shown consistently poor judgement and too much tolerance of failiure. Pietersen is a winner with a winner's mentality. Moore's should go now and take Bell and Harmison with him. Well done Kev, you just keep getting better and better.

From Ian H, on Sun 4 Jan 6:49PM
  15. Moores was instrumental in the deparure of Michael Vaughan largely based on jealousy of his status within the team and is thus determined not to have him in the side at any price.Ddespite all of Vaughans weaknesses he does have a fine tactical brain something sadly lacking currently. Moores was also responsible for dropping Mathew Hoggard the most reliable and consistant bowler in the side after one poor game. He was also behind the selection of the Aussie Pie Chucker for the SA test. Poor judgement all round he must go.

From Michael, on Sun 4 Jan 6:31PM
  16. Nobody should ever under estimate how good Kevin Pieterson is or can be on his day. He is exciting to watch and can win games single handedly... but as a captain he is in his infancy and I feel he wanted Micheal Vaughan in the squad to nuture him along.. We have seen that at the moment he lacks know how on fielding positions and bowling changes, as India have been given a Test Match when needing 375.. that should not of happened. But one thing is certain, sack Moores and you may as well let Pieterson be Chief of Cricket, Head of Selectors and everything else and that surely cannot be right!!!

    From anthony_kerry, on Sun 4 Jan 5:58PM
  17. OK, if KP is to go, then who will come in? Collingwood or rejuvenation of Vaughn? Its easy to find a replacement for Moore. KP's performance record, as a player, may not be as a captain, has been excellent. A captain is just good as the rest of the blokes in the team and he doesn't have a magic wand to wish away the bad patch of English cricket.

    From mvmuthu1946, on Sun 4 Jan 5:53PM
  18. KP should never have been appointed as captain. His dislike of Moores was already known, and he lacked both captaincy experience and even a vestige of diplomacy. Being a super-exciting batsman (on his day) in not enough. A captain has to lead, not boss.
I'd sack KP, appoint Strauss as test captain and restore Collingwood as one-day captain. (In an ideal world the same guy does both jobs, but we don't have that luxury.) KP could tour as a player - his choice. And at the end of the summer if we didn't hold the Ashes, Moores would have to go.
But my scenario won't happen. Moores will no doubt be sacked in the next few days. In which case no credible replacement will be found - who'd take the job on those terms?

    From charles27, on Sun 4 Jan 5:27PM
  19. Robbo, you're not such a smarty-alec are you? According to your somewhat bigoted criteria, neither Strauss nor Shah would be eligible to play for England!! And i bet you were as quiet as a church mouse when Nasser Hussain was captain and England were winning test matches.

    From royjohn4, on Sun 4 Jan 2:55PM
