Pietersen-Moores rift grows

Eurosport - Sun, 04 Jan 15:38:00 2009

England may have to decide between keeping Kevin Pietersen as their captain or Peter Moores as their coach after the star batsman called for an end to the duo's "unhealthy" relationship.

Kevin Pietersen - 0

The News of the World - the Sunday tabloid in which Pietersen has a column - said there appeared "little prospect" of the pair working together on the upcoming tour of the West Indies, where England will look to gather momentum ahead of their bid to reclaim the Ashes later this year.

It added there had been a "complete breakdown in what was an already fraught relationship" and said attempts by ECB managing director Hugh Morris to broker a peace deal between Pietersen and Moores now had an "impossible" chance of success.

Pietersen, who broke off from a holiday in his native South Africa to hold talks with Morris on Saturday, stopped short of calling for Moores's sacking.

But the 28-year-old told the News of the World: "This situation is not healthy, we have to make sure it is settled as soon as possible and certainly before we fly off to the West Indies.

"Everybody has to have the same aims and pull in the same direction for the good of the England team."

Contrary to earlier reports, the paper said the exclusion of former England captain Michael Vaughan from the West Indies squad was not the cause of Pietersen's bust-up with Moores, insisting the pair had fallen out long before the tour party was announced.

Pietersen took over as captain following Vaughan's tearful resignation during August's home series loss to South Africa.

He won widespread admiration for the way he recently led England, who lost the series 1-0, back to India for a two-Test tour which risked being abandoned because of the Mumbai terror attacks.

Moores is on a one-year rolling contract and any attempt to sack him could cost the ECB as much as £250,000 and leave them scrambling to find a new coach days before England arrive in the Caribbean on January 21 for a four-Test tour.

However, a "dressing-room source" told the News of the World: "There is no way Pietersen and Moores can work together, they're just too far apart.

"The ECB are damned if they do and damned if they don't. If they back KP, then there's massive problems among the backroom staff.

"But if they go with the coach, then the best player becomes disillusioned, they possibly lose a captain and there is a huge fracture."

Moores, given a chance by Saturday's Sun to play down his row with Pietersen said: "I hope you understand that I can't really comment at this stage."

Former Sussex coach Moores replaced 2005 Ashes-winner Duncan Fletcher in the England job after last year's World Cup in the West Indies.

In Moores's 22 Tests as coach, England have won eight, lost six and drawn eight.

But seven of those victories came against New Zealand and the West Indies, two teams below England in the world rankings, while a win over South Africa, in Pietersen's first match in full charge, only took place after the series had been lost.

  1. My dear, eloquent fadagong. Sadly, it's apparent that your command of the English language is somemwhat wanting, but I hope against hope you're a bit better with figures...... If you'd care to check the statistics, over the 7 matches in India, Pietersen was only 2nd in the batting averages in both test and one-day matches - Strauss and Shah were best in those respective statistics so, factually, your statement is incorrect.
    Want to try again, cretin?

  2. Does it blo..y matter wher he's from? He's the captain and that is it, period. The ECB cant, or wouldn't, turn the clock back to suit you pathetic lot who have nothing to argue about except irrelevant and unchangeable things.
I guess its like this for you: when KP scores a ton, regains the ashes he's English, when he has a poor knock or loses a match he's SAfrican?
What a petty lot you are.

From Ray S, on Sun 4 Jan 2:45PM
  3. It doesn't matter what nationality the captain is or who we have as a coach we haven't got a chance in the ashes cos without the likes of wicket takers like Simon Jones or Matthew Hoggard we ain't gonna bowl the aussies out!!

  4. Fadagong you seem to be missing the point Pieterson is NOT English is that concept too hard for a dimwit like you to understand.

  5. monkeyspanner, robbo and vsenna55 are @#$% nitwits, @#$% u 3, kp is the best bat in team england!

  6. Monkeyspanner is right. I have always thought that National Managers/Head Coaches in every sport should have to have exactly the same qualifications as the players have to have.

  7. vsenna55 - A bit strong, mate, but I entirely agree with your sentiments.
Peitersen is a foreigner - and let's be clear about this, that is NOT a racist statement, it is fact that Pietersen is NOT English, he is South African - and therefore, were it not by dint of a bizarre rule, he wouldn't even be playing for the country, let alone be its captain. However, more importantly let's look at his recent track record - Played 8 won 0 drawn 1......! Go on then, someone convince me that his stewardship of the English cricket side has been successful. His own personal performances have been questionable, too, so he can hardly have claimed to have been 'leading from the front'!
The selectors should display the same (belated) courage as they did last week by not selecting 'Mr Cliché' himself (Vaughan), and they should drop Pietersen completely! If he then wants to go home crying, that's his prerogative - but somehow, given the Bocks' impending N°1 status, I rather doubt they will want him either!

  8. I agree with wearmouthsimon as regards the ashes we do want them back on English soil but we only want players in the team who were born on English soil so that South African should go and play for South Africa to give us a better chance of beating them when we play them because he is never in this world a test player or Captain.Lets get back to the old ways and only play true englishmen i.e. born here.

From monkey spanner, on Sun 4 Jan 1:33PM
  9. If Peterson Can't work with Moores then he should resign. As good as we keep getting told he is, and not lets forget he has'nt been anything special of late. Then he should go. But we all know he wont because of the money involved in international cricket. My suggestion to Peterson would be :- resign and get back in too county cricket were you will perform better.

From Brian, on Sun 4 Jan 1:16PM
  10. Not with hindsight, more 'I told you so'. KP should never have been appointed Captain. He is a good 'pretend Cricket' (1 day) batsman but has always been over-rated as a 'proper Cricket' (Test) player. He has one fundamental flaw - he is self centred and never plays for the team. Not even being Captain can correct that.
He is obviously a poor tactician - that's why he wanted Michael Vaughan on the tour to pick his brains.
The Captain, whoever he is, should not be able to dictate who the manager is.
As for a Manager - we need someone who is experienced in Test Cricket not a nobody. There are plenty to chose from ; Graham Gooch, Jack Russell (who worked wonders for Gloucestershire, Mike Gatting, David Gower amongst others.

  12. The Skipper-Coach bickering is not unique to Team England. I often crops up when the Coach tends to be in the forefront and seeks to be in lime light of media. It has happened in many other countries. Whoever command the support and backing of senior players should stay and the other, well, the obvious.

From Emmveeyem, on Sun 4 Jan 12:59PM
  13. KP should stay moores unless backed by his captain and therefore team, would unfortunately have to go, this england team is rebuilding and therefore a fresh captain who may not be english by birth but is english in his JOB, should be allowed to push forward with his project of regaining the ashes and taking england to the top of the table, it's a team game and to be a team you must work together, pull the same way and unite, And for the comments about KP going home, sorry but he has 3 lions on his body which means he is home he has BRANDED himself an English Cricketer, If my views are not to the liking of the mindless few so be it, What would you rather be, watching a failing English/wales team or a winning one???

From steven b, on Sun 4 Jan 12:18PM
  14. With all the bickering does anyone really think the poms will be up for the test series, the Aussies will be rubbing their hands together, as we say, no worries , Ned Kelly

  15. I agree with you 100% melaniepoynton. Moores's record as coach is mediocre to say the least and well below par for an England coach wanting to regain the Ashes, to be frank.

I also agree that tani1959 knows nothing about playing cricket. The captain has a more important role to play in cricket than the captain on a football pitch and the coach a lesser role than a manager in football. Obviously Moores's game plans and attitude to playing cricket doesn't match KP's ambition and vision of where he sees England progressing to. I would go go with KP's vision (even though I am NOT a KP fan, as a Proteas supporter and native South African & well known-among my friends and fellow cricket player I can't stand KP-the-ex-South-African) because his brand of cricket has helped England win back the Ashes and was impressive in handing my beloved Proteas a near white-wash in the one day series last year, i.e. when we in a position to be number 1 in the ICC ODI rankings.

As for vsenna55 your vitriol is best placed in a pub after have 10 or more pints have been downed. I find your xenophobic attitude not only repulsive but downright offensive. KP is not the 1st S. African to captain England at cricket and have had prolific batsmen in the English team over the decades of SA isolation. KP's birth-place is not the issue here, the issue is that the current England cricket captain and the coach does not see eye to eye. End of.

From Katherine, on Sun 4 Jan 11:29AM
  16. I agree with you melaniepoynton. Obviously tani1959 doesn't know about cricket, let alone playing it.

KP you were chosen as captain not as one of the selectors so keep quiet and do the job you are being paid to do.Why should a batsman who has got no form be picked to tour .Just because you say so.OMG who do you think you are.Must be galling to see your ex countrymen doing something you couldn't.Namely beating the Aussies in their own back yard.LMAO.
