Premier League - City confirm Bridge signing

Eurosport - Sun, 04 Jan 20:10:00 2009

Wayne Bridge has completed his £10 million move from Chelsea to Manchester City after signing a four-and-a-half-year contract at Eastlands.

The clubs agreed terms for the 28-year-old before Bridge put pen to paper on a four-and-a-half-year contract a day later to become City's first signing of the January transfer window.

"I played alongside him at Southampton and I saw him come through the ranks. He was an outstanding young player and he's progressed year on year in his career," manager Mark Hughes told City's website.

"He's a successful player. He's an England international and has just played for one of the top four sides in the country.

"He's of the right quality and he's the type of player we need to attract. We need good players that understand this league and we'll look to carry on in that way and add more if we can."

Bridge, who has 32 England caps, joined Chelsea from Southampton for £7m in 2003 but struggled to hold down a regular first-team place after the arrival of Ashley Cole from Arsenal in 2006.

  4. Will you muppets get off Hughes' back. The truth is Dunne, Richards, Gelson, Jo Elano and Benjani are not good enough and none are Hughes signings. Sparky will get it right so stop moaning and start supporting.

  5. A good signing for a team who plan to finish in the top 10 but no more. Doesn't sound like the owners of Man City have been clear about what their objectives are, unless they are satisfied with mediocrity! Is it me, or is something not quite right with all this?

  10. That is right decision had done by Wayne Bridge to pullout from out of favour at chelsea and it good for Man City to sign him because Man City not have world class defender like this ex - chelsea player.I'm proud with Big Phil to let him go.....

  11. Don't u think that Hughes should b given time 2 get 2 know the players and how they play 2gether? as should any new manager! Are all those fans expecting a perfect scoring team straightaway all living in cloud cuckoo land. Miracles DON'T happen. I knowfans are disillusioned (as a Spurs fan I know a bit of that myself) but they should b behind their team and manager, supporting them thru good and bad. So start acting like fans and give him the support he deserves. U never kno, if he thinks the fans r behind him he may just well improve!!!!

  13. haz-r-1980-- i agree with you on that one. i think pearce would do a great job at city, i was dissapointed that he lost his job with city cos the funds he got was next to nothing, then they gave sven lots to waste on the current bunch of no hopers. the bridge signing is a good one, but a couple of defensive midfielders is what you truly need. city are good going forward from midfield but when you loose the ball they're running strait through and overrunning the defence with numbers, dunne isnt playing worse he's having to do the midfield holding job from defence.

  18. wtf! wayne bridge is better than cole and i am a chelsea fan. i am disgraced at scolari for agreeing to sell him to buy more players. we dont need more players, we need him to sort his stupid tactics out. at least avram grant helped us get somewhere. i think he was a better manager than every1 thought.

From Zak, on Sat 3 Jan 11:35PM
  19. Man City need to worry about one thing right now and that's defense! We have already seen what the midfield and offense can do, but the defense is the problem!

I recommend to spend as much money to fixing the defense before touching mid and offense!
