Jermain Defoe has received threats from Portsmouth fans angered by the prospect of him leaving the club that have left him "infuriated".
The England striker looks increasingly likely to leave Fratton Park with Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and even Juventus being linked with a move for him.
And Defoe has revealed he has suffered similar abuse to the threats Harry Redknapp received upon leaving Pompey and joining rivals Southampton.
"I have absolutely no idea how they got hold of my number but some of the calls have made me sick to my stomach," he told the Sunday Mirror.
"I have reported it to officials at the club, but cannot accept that it is coming from people with a balanced state of mind.
"It has infuriated and upset my family and left me wondering what on earth possesses people to do things like that."
A return to Tottenham - the club Defoe left in the last January transfer window for Portsmouth for around £7.5 million - was being negotiated, but Spurs chairman Daniel Levy refused to meet Pompey chief executive Peter Storrie's current valuation of the 26-year-old.
Defoe revealed his desire to return to North London and reunite with his former boss, saying: "If Portsmouth can agree an acceptable deal with Tottenham I would like the opportunity to talk to them.
"I've enjoyed my time immensely here, but I can't deny that Harry Redknapp's departure as manager hit me hard particularly because he was the primary reason why I joined Portsmouth in the first place and said so at the time.
"I enjoy being around him because he brings the best out of me and that is all you can ask for from a manager."
Redknapp indicated that talks had come to and end on Friday following his current side's 3-1 win over Wigan in the FA Cup.
When asked about the potential price of signing Defoe, Redknapp said: "I think it's in excess of £20 million probably.
"The two clubs are miles apart in their valuation of the player so I think we'll have to move on."

I admire defoe. He may be just one of the many millionaire footballers these days, but he keeps himself to himself and puts in 100% every game. He's not a PlayBoy, which makes a change these days.
It doesn't matter what sport you play, death threats are 100 times worse in the USA for sports than over here. I hope he can 'try' to laugh them off for the sad people that take the time to write horrible things.
what kind of sad idiot takes time out their life to write and send a death threat to a someone they dont know because they want to change their place of work?
I wish whoever done it would come on here and explain what good they think they are doing and what they possibly think they can achieve
evanskopite, show me your evidence that suggests that the general public want Portsmouth to get relegated. Almost every football fan I speak to who is not a Portsmouth fan loves to see Portsmouth do well and doesn't want them to get relegated. I just think people still find it hard to accept that a club outside of the top 4 won last season's FA Cup. Get over it, some clubs don't have billions of pounds to spend and cannot buy League titles.
i have always thought this ever since i was a kid that the chant PLAY UP POMPEY is so gay.
This doesn't surprise me at all. Portsmouth is a very backward town full of scum with a small town mentality.
portsmouth fans are f uckin retards!! jus cos defoe wants to leave the f uckin club dosnt mean death threats!!!
n obs

"Typical of pompey fans - brain dead pond life. If they could muster just one brain cell between them all, they could have put it to better use by beating Bristol City. Pompey fans are the best in the country for promoting yob culture."
Couldn't have put it better myself and i also agree that appointing Tony Adams was a mistake. A top flight manager he ain't. Doubt whether he has the attributes to stay a manager long term IMO. As for Portscum, I don't think there is another club outside of Newcastle, the general public would rather see get relegated...
He's not worth anywhere near £20 million. The footballing world really will have gone mad if he goes for anywhere abover £10!
Andrews...thanks for those kind words about our beloved club. We are in fact still the FA Cup holders and are a club steeped in history, lest ye forget. And anyway, chances are the person or people who made these idiotic threats to Defoe were probably not even Portsmouth fans at all and certainly are not endorsed by anyone who has a remote love for PFC. 99.9% of real Portsmouth fans are good, passionate, hard working people who just love their club.
tough choice
Adams is right not to want players who aren't behind Portsmouth Football Club. Defoe should shut his mouth and let the management sort his transfer out; I for one am p*ssed off that alot of transfers are now triggered by press intrusion. Defoes' form has been @#$% of late; he should be playing his heart out to show the rest of the premiership how good a player he is, even though he ain't.
I can't believe some of the ignorance I am hearing from people about this article. I have no particular preference for Defoe,Portsmouth or Spurs (an LFC fan) but seem to remember the following:
1) Defoe spent 5 seasons at Spurs, at least 2-3 of which was as a substitute and not a starter. He had several opportunities to leave for more money & was linked with Man Utd & LFC but kept quiet and stayed to fight for his place.. seemed like he loved Spurs
2) He never wanted to leave Spurs but like many people in life leave a job because they want to work for a person (H.Redknapp)& to play some 1st team footy
3) Whilst I feel some empathy for Pompey fans, you always knew that his heart was in London and that Harry leaving would have an effect on SEVERAL PLAYERS.. watch
4) DEATH THREATS ARE UNACCEPTABLE... think not then imagine you handed in your notice this week at work for a better job paying just £7k a year more, let alone a week... and yes many people would leave for that.. what would you say if colleagues sent YOU death threat letters.. is it still acceptable?
5)WHY SHOULD any football player show loyalty to clubs... when clubs, Managers & Chairmen are ready they will sell or marginalise a player to get what they want, despite promosing differently.. A FACT & NOT DISPUTABLE as MONEY runs football nowadays and nothing else.
THIS IS MODERN DAY FOOTBALL.. I dont like all of it but accept it.. Fans are the only loyal ones,so forget Defoe Pompey fans just get behind your team.. in my view you should be more worried about Tony Adams than Defoe.. I think you made a bad Manager choice there but only time will tell..... HOWEVER NO-ONE DESERVES DEATH THREATS for wanting to change their job, no matter how much others don't like it.
12.5 mill profit,if Pompey could make thar sort of profit on every player they would become a top 4 team
calm down dears it's just a transfer
u sad pompey fans get over it.your a s*** team wiv a s*** manager and a s*** stadium, who wil get relegated or go into administration next season.defoe is and always was a spurs player but no one knew that keane was going to leave, if we did he would av stayed.
Phil you chat bubbles
Since when did Yahoo start classing "D ick" as offensive?? It's a name! LOL
richardmccall24 (comment 2), the @#$% you come out with isn't even worth commenting on. You're obviously from the South, which is why sensible Northerners thank God for the North-South divide. @#$% by name, @#$% by nature huh? You imbecile.
dazmanutd, are you familiar with the word "has"? It has an H in it, as in 'Hello you Halfwit'. Did the 'H' fall off your keyboard along with all your punctuation keys you complete amd utter nitwit?
