Premier League - Defoe receives death threats

Eurosport - Sun, 04 Jan 17:26:00 2009

Jermain Defoe has received threats from Portsmouth fans angered by the prospect of him leaving the club that have left him "infuriated".

The England striker looks increasingly likely to leave Fratton Park with Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and even Juventus being linked with a move for him.

And Defoe has revealed he has suffered similar abuse to the threats Harry Redknapp received upon leaving Pompey and joining rivals Southampton.

"I have absolutely no idea how they got hold of my number but some of the calls have made me sick to my stomach," he told the Sunday Mirror.

"I have reported it to officials at the club, but cannot accept that it is coming from people with a balanced state of mind.

"It has infuriated and upset my family and left me wondering what on earth possesses people to do things like that."

A return to Tottenham - the club Defoe left in the last January transfer window for Portsmouth for around £7.5 million - was being negotiated, but Spurs chairman Daniel Levy refused to meet Pompey chief executive Peter Storrie's current valuation of the 26-year-old.

Defoe revealed his desire to return to North London and reunite with his former boss, saying: "If Portsmouth can agree an acceptable deal with Tottenham I would like the opportunity to talk to them.

"I've enjoyed my time immensely here, but I can't deny that Harry Redknapp's departure as manager hit me hard particularly because he was the primary reason why I joined Portsmouth in the first place and said so at the time.

"I enjoy being around him because he brings the best out of me and that is all you can ask for from a manager."

Redknapp indicated that talks had come to and end on Friday following his current side's 3-1 win over Wigan in the FA Cup.

When asked about the potential price of signing Defoe, Redknapp said: "I think it's in excess of £20 million probably.

"The two clubs are miles apart in their valuation of the player so I think we'll have to move on."

  2. I can't believe some of the ignorance I am hearing from people about this article. I have no particular preference for Defoe,Portsmouth or Spurs (an LFC fan) but seem to remember the following:
    1) Defoe spent 5 seasons at Spurs, at least 2-3 of which was as a substitute and not a starter. He had several opportunities to leave for more money & was linked with Man Utd & LFC but kept quiet and stayed to fight for his place.. seemed like he loved Spurs
    2) He never wanted to leave Spurs but like many people in life leave a job because they want to work for a person (H.Redknapp)& to play some 1st team footy
    3) Whilst I feel some empathy for Pompey fans, you always knew that his heart was in London and that Harry leaving would have an effect on SEVERAL PLAYERS.. watch
    4) DEATH THREATS ARE UNACCEPTABLE... think not then imagine you handed in your notice this week at work for a better job paying just £7k a year more, let alone a week... and yes many people would leave for that.. what would you say if colleagues sent YOU death threat letters.. is it still acceptable?
5)WHY SHOULD any football player show loyalty to clubs... when clubs, Managers & Chairmen are ready they will sell or marginalise a player to get what they want, despite promosing differently.. A FACT & NOT DISPUTABLE as MONEY runs football nowadays and nothing else.

THIS IS MODERN DAY FOOTBALL.. I dont like all of it but accept it.. Fans are the only loyal ones,so forget Defoe Pompey fans just get behind your team.. in my view you should be more worried about Tony Adams than Defoe.. I think you made a bad Manager choice there but only time will tell..... HOWEVER NO-ONE DESERVES DEATH THREATS for wanting to change their job, no matter how much others don't like it.

  3. The fans feel betrayed but that is not an excuse to send death threats to a player who wants to leave the club, that to me is absolutely unacceptable.

  5. I think that the portsmouth fans who are giving Defoe death theats are sick in the head and need to grow up, come on how do you expect to keep players like defoe at a club that doesnt seem to be going anywhere, your manager ditch you players want to leave, what does that tell you about your club, CHAMPIONSHIP FOR PORTSMOUTH NEXT SEASON. Defoe it would be the best thing you will ever do to leave Portsmouth. BCFC FOR LIFE

  9. spurs fans should put on a mass protest at there next home game and tell harry in no uncertain terms you dont want him back he left once with no thought for the fans so why would you want him back now or as he become a better player at pompey .no i dont think so either its all about money another average greedy footballer taking the mickey out of the fans

  10. Fans are so fanatical about their teams nowadays that they become overly emotional. However it is very disquieting that a player can no longer feel safe just because he wants to move somewhere else. Debate the issue but never threaten a person let alone endanger his family. For goodness sake its only soccer. Enjoy the game. Good sense must prevail.

  11. defoe is a typical greedy footballer who thought the big four were going to buy him when he spat his dummy out at spurs when portsmouth came in he should have realised he is not as good as he thinks he is but as soon as harry wants him back at tottenhamhe demands a move he is a big time charlie who nails anything in a skirt when he is posing in the nightclubs he frequents and he just wants another payday after already copping for one when he went to pompey .the money will be for a villa in spain so he can be on a place in the sun again he as no loyalty to spurs so why would there fans want him back again knowing he is just after another signing on fee i pity the club who buy him they deserve him and what he will do if another club come sniffing around he is a true football mercenary

  15. Nobody can condone death threats, that is stepping well over the mark. The trouble is Portsmouth is a passionate football city, we get right behind our players and management - albeit Tony's getting a bit of a rough ride now in some quarters. Whenever they give their all there's no problem, but when you start giving 50 or 60% as Jermaine has been doing since Harry left, then we'll certainly let you know about it. We're up a creak without a paddle at the moment and having one of your best players rocking the boat further and giving abject performances is infuriating. It's part and parcel of the modern game, but the contempt with which he has treated the club and the fans in recent weeks - openly requesting a transfer, criticising certain aspects of the team and barely trying in matches (typified by his woeful penalty miss and recent 'illness') - has made him one of the biggest hate figures down here.

There are right ways and wrong ways to go about things, just look at Diarra, absolutely no issue with him making his move as he did t quietly and without letting it distract him on the pitch. Defoe did the same to West Ham, just look how much they like him these days, and I'm sure he'll do it again. I can honestly say that I wish him only misfortune and professional disaster, but beyond that is going too far, the sooner he leaves the better.

  16. Jeez, every part of the country has its share of good and bad areas.
I'm only glad that I don't live in one of the cesspit's around my region, or somewhere far worse.
I'm a manc fan and i joked with my work colleagues that as I was on holiday in spain at the end of the transfer window beginning of this season I'd need a shotgun for a trip to Madrid. But it was a JOKE and i'd never send death threats to any player (with the possible exception of Maradonna). No, that kind of behaviour is unacceptable.

  17. Scoot you are such an idiot, this is a very serious matter, when idiots from Spurs abused Big Sol you were all up in arms.
Defoe in footballing terms is ok but not a great, Harry is a man who has proven himself.
I wonder why he jumps around so much and suspect it's just greed!!!
This is just a pointless debate Spurs should be looking elsewhere to improve Defoe is not the answer, Fans should remember players and family are off limit when not on the pitch. Football must be the winner not thugs.

  19. Harry told him what to say....to make it easier to get him. He probably organised the phone calls himself...Pompey will have to sell Defoe now, at a much lower price! Never underestimate the powers of the Judas to get the player he wants!!!!!!
