Scottish Premier League - Gers close Celtic gap

Rangers closed the gap on Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premier League to five points with a 3-0 win at Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

FOOTBALL - Kris Boyd, Rangers - 0

Pedro Mendes scored a sublime strike less than a minute into the second half to set Gers on their way.

His sidefooted curler from 25 yards defeated Ryan Esson all ends up as it found the top corner.

Kris Boyd made sure of the points with two goals in the final 10 minutes.

After 83 the striker finished into the bottom corner from close range and with three left on the clock headed home to complete his brace.

Inverness were unlucky not to open the scoring in the first half, Ian Black firing just wide from distance, while Nacho Novo - playing out wide for the visitors - almost chipped Esson from close to the halfway line, his shot dropping just over the bar.

Walter Smith's Rangers made up two points on Glasgow rivals and SPL leaders Celtic over the weekend after the Hoops were held 2-2 at home by Dundee United on Saturday.
