David Beckham has denied his loan move to Milan was solely an attempt to win a place in the England national team.

The 33-year-old joined the Rossoneri recently on a short-term loan deal while his full-time employers, MLS side Los Angeles Galaxy, are on a winter break.

The move was widely considered an attempt to win favour with England boss Fabio Capello.

But Beckham insists the chance to experience Italian football was too good to resist.

"I didn't join Milan just for that reason - to play in Europe and make myself available for England selection," he said.

"I have never played in Italy and I think it's one of the best leagues in the world.

"I want to concentrate on working with the team. I know the kind of team Milan is, the professionalism that exists, and I am willing to work really hard for my place in the squad."

Beckham also insisted he had "no regrets" over his decision to move to the United States from Real Madrid, a decision which earned him much criticism in the press.

"I love my team, the LA Galaxy, but this for me is a great experience. I feel fortunate to have this great opportunity," he explained.

"I always try to have no regrets in life, or in my career. I made the decision to go to LA two years ago and I've had a good time there.

"Now I have this chance to play for one of the biggest clubs in the whole world. I'm enjoying my time with the club and the fans are just great."

Beckham is now in line to make his first start for the Italian giants when the Serie A resumes next week.

Milan face Roma on Sunday January 11, and Beckham was adamant he is ready for the clash.

"I'm always ready to play but I know the coach decides," he said. "Physically I know I need to work hard to reach 100 per cent, not to be able to play but to play well."

The good news for Beckham is that coach Carlo Ancelotti agrees the Englishman is ready for his first game, and promised he would feature in the clash with Roma at some point.

"He is a great champion," said Ancelotti. "A very, very good player, but he needs to work hard because there is a lot of competition in the squad. But we'll use him for sure."
