Charlton have boosted their squad with the signing of Portuguese centre-half Paulo Monteiro who has joined the Addicks as a free agent. The 23-year-old has recently been released by Romanian side Farul Constanta.

Monteiro impressed manager Alan Pardew in a reserve match against Crystal Palace last month, and has now put pen to paper on a contract until the end of the season.

"I am very pleased to sign for such a big club, a great club," he told Charlton's official website.

"It is my ambition to show my value during the rest of the season, and I want to prove I am good enough to play for Charlton and win a longer contract at the end of the season."

Monteiro, who has played alongside Charlton midfielder Jose Semedo for Portugal's Under-21 side, becomes Pardew's fourth signing since the turn of the year, joining Andy Gray, Greg Halford and Lee Cook at the Valley.
