The cash-strapped Saints were forced to loan out Grzegorz Rasiak and Rudi Skacel on transfer deadline day to save money and are desperate for a financial injection.

A statement from Southampton Leisure Holdings PLC to the Stock Exchange read: "The Board of Southampton confirms they are in discussions with certain third parties in relation to an investment in, or a possible offer, for the company."

"There is no certainty that any such offer or investment will be made and discussions are at an early stage. Further announcements will be made in due course as and when necessary."

Saints are currently without a permanent manager after George Burley took the Scotland job, and lie 14th in the Championship in their third season since they were relegated from Premier League.

Previous chairman Michael Wilde resigned in February last year having failed to attract outside investment, while links with both Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen and a consortium led by former Manchester City defender Ray Ranson came to nothing.

Ranson has since taken over at Championship rivals Coventry.
